Half-timbered houses dating from four centuries stand in Bad Camberg’s market square. They retain features of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist styles; many of the buildings have remained largely unchanged. Architecture enthusiasts will find several periods and building styles gathered in one place—not just a uniform half-timbered streetscape.
Half-timbered Houses, the Amthof and City History
The Amthof is another striking example of half-timbered architecture: this complex of several wings features 145 metres of exposed half-timbering. The Amthof Gallery is at the end of the south wing, and there is a carillon in the courtyard. The gallery and courtyard provide space for markets and cultural events, although no specific event dates are associated with them. The Bad Camberg Festival features annual theatre performances in the courtyard. If you are planning to visit for a performance, check the dates for the relevant season.
The town and tower museum, established in 1981, is housed in the historic rooms of the Hohenfeld Chapel on Am Amthof street. Its collection includes objects and documents of significance to local and natural history and the history of the town. The Old Jewish School offers another way to explore local history: designed as a documentation centre, it brings the largely lost town fortifications back to life virtually and preserves knowledge of Camberg’s Jewish community, destroyed by the National Socialists. Visitors can also explore the building independently using the newly installed signs.
The fourth floor of the Obertorturm offers views across Bad Camberg towards the Taunus. Since 1981, visitors have been able to climb the tower from the Hohenfeld Chapel, ascending 133 steps to the tower keeper’s apartment. Before planning a visit, check whether access is currently available. On the way to the Kreuzkapelle, you will also find seven Stations of the Cross stones: donated by noble families in 1700, they were created by the Hadamar School of Sculpture.
Kneipp Spa Park and Walks
The central spa park invites you to take a stroll, with its herb garden, foot-watering basin and mini-golf course. In the Kneipp Spa Park, water features, mature trees, walking paths beside meadows and well-tended flowerbeds complete the scene. The Kneipp herb garden next to the MEDIAN Therapy Centre at the spa park covers 800 square metres. Its 120 perennial and 15 woody plant species are arranged in 14 beds. Bad Camberg has been Hesse’s oldest and Germany’s third-oldest Kneipp spa since 1927—the town’s Kneipp heritage is reflected both in its history and in the facilities mentioned here.
Since 2024, the SinnesErlebnisPfad (Sensory Experience Trail) has featured installations made of wood, metal and stone around the historic moat, in meadows and along paths. They invite visitors to try things out and experience them for themselves; the installations may change over time. If you are planning to play mini golf, you will find an 18-hole course. A boules court is right next to it, and a fitness trail with equipment and instructions for cardiovascular exercises is also nearby. Check current opening hours and operating status before planning a specific mini-golf visit.
Choose Hiking and Cycling Routes
For longer walks, 27 circular hiking trails, covering a total of 225 kilometres, have been developed in Bad Camberg in collaboration with the local beautification associations and district councillors of WĂĽrges, Oberselters, Erbach, Dombach and Schwickershausen. The trails are shown on a hiking map; check local trail conditions before setting out. The map also includes the 25-kilometre Kercheweg. It describes four terrain therapy routes, which can be used as part of exercise therapy. This lets you choose between circular trails, a named longer route and the terrain therapy routes described for exercise therapy.
There is also a dedicated Bad Camberg cycling guide, with twelve routes and three connecting routes towards Hessenweiler, Limburg and Idstein. The GPX files provided can be used with other apps or GPS devices; using Komoot for navigation requires an account. As digital route formats and links may be updated, check the guide for the latest information before setting out.
Guided Tours and Dates
Bad Camberg regularly offers classic city tours, half-timbered house and town wall tours, Kneipp herb garden tours, themed city tours and children’s city tours. They offer insights into the town’s history. For a closer look at the half-timbered architecture, the tour lasts an hour and a half: it showcases 70 exposed half-timbered houses dating from six centuries and explains different building styles and details. Check dates and availability for your preferred period in advance; this also applies to any booking requirements for tours.
