The 14-kilometre Hohe Straße extra trail, cycling routes around Eisemroth and the Alte Schule Übernthal reveal different sides of Siegbach. For planning purposes, it is worth considering these topics separately: the circular trail offers a hike with specific route details, while the cycling routes are situated at different distances from the natural swimming pool. Architectural history adds another perspective on the municipality.

Hiking the Hohe Straße extra trail

The Hohe Straße extra trail passes through three districts of the municipality of Siegbach, goes by two viewpoints and is 14 kilometres long as a circular route. Along the way, you will climb 308 metres in elevation. These details give the tour a clear outline if you want to plan a longer hike as a separate activity.

The route’s history is also part of the hiking experience: the trade road followed by the extra trail was first developed by the Celts and refortified during the Napoleonic era. Along the route, hikers repeatedly encounter traces of mining, which shaped the region’s economy for centuries. The hike thus brings together landscapes, the history of transport routes and an important chapter in the region’s economic history.

Schloßberg and the view

Schloßberg is the highest point in the municipality of Siegbach. At its summit is a viewing platform with a stone orientation board on which arrows mark landmarks in the landscape. The high point and the orientation board offer a separate point of interest alongside the circular hike: here, the focus is on the view and its labelled overview.

Cycling routes and natural swimming pool

When comparing the cycling routes, it is helpful to consider their respective locations in relation to the natural swimming pool in Siegbach-Eisemroth. The Seenradweg runs from the Perftalsperre reservoir to the Aartalsee lake and passes directly by the pool. The Salzböde-Radweg runs nearby. The difference is clear: the pool is right on one route and close to the other.

Aartalsee itself is in the neighbouring municipality of Bischoffen and therefore outside Siegbach. It is the second-largest lake by surface area in Hesse. The natural swimming pool in Eisemroth and Aartalsee are therefore two distinct places, even though the Seenradweg links them in its route description. At the natural swimming pool, a snack station invites swimmers, hikers and cyclists to relax on a sunny terrace with views of the pool and the surrounding countryside.

Architectural history in Übernthal

The Alte Schule Übernthal stands in the centre of the village. Built by local residents in 1781, the school and church hall features imposing oak half-timbering and tree motifs characteristic of its period. Its location, date of construction and original purpose give the building a distinct place in local history, while the half-timbering also puts its construction method in focus. Übernthal thus complements the perspectives of routes and landscapes with a notable historic building.

Cultural attractions in the Lahn-Dill district

Beyond Siegbach, the Lahn-Dill district offers further cultural attractions. In Wetzlar, the Lottehaus commemorates Goethe’s meeting with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and reception of his first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther”.

In Dillenburg, Villa Grün presents objects and detailed scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms. The basement also houses an elaborate, multimedia mining exhibition. Glockenwelt Burg Greifenstein, in turn, takes visitors through a thousand years of German bell history with almost 100 bells. These attractions complement Siegbach’s own themes of hiking, cycling routes and architectural history with further cultural highlights in the Lahn-Dill district.
