Mittenaar combines designated hiking trails through the ridges of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park with local heritage museums and traces of history. The options range from a challenging hike around the municipality to trails with a scenic or historical focus. This lets you take different interests into account when planning, without trying to pack every sight into a single tour.

Hiking between ridges and history

Mittenaar is in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park and has numerous designated hiking trails for exploring the low mountain landscape. The Hörre, a nature reserve with a dense stand of beech trees, is also part of the local landscape. The routes offer various points to consider when choosing a trail: distance and elevation gain, trail markings, scenery and thematic focus.

The challenging Mittenaar 2010 permanent hiking trail starts in Bicken and leads around the municipality. The hike is about 30 kilometers long and has around 2,000 meters of elevation gain. Another option is the well-marked “50 Years of Mittenaar Anniversary Trail,” a circular route that passes through the areas belonging to all the districts. This gives you a choice between a tour with a specified distance and elevation gain and a circular route through all the district areas; details about difficulty and route help you factor in the differences when making your own plans.

The Dernbachwiesen extra tour passes through woodland and fields and offers views into numerous valleys. At 445 meters, Alte Burg is its highest point. Archaeologically notable sites dating back more than 4,000 years are located close to the Rennweg. Here, scenery and far-reaching history come together around the same extra tour. The Bickener Ritterspuren extra tour takes a different thematic approach, focusing on the roughly 600-year-old history of the Lords of Bicken.

The Bicken shelter is another local point of reference for hikers: it serves as a refreshment stop in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland hiking park. These named stops complement the different route profiles, without establishing a set itinerary.

Local heritage museums and traces of history

The Bicken Local Heritage Museum focuses on household furnishings and everyday objects from agriculture and crafts dating from the early 20th century onward. The museum also has a working forge. It also preserves more than 2,000 photographs of Bicken from the late 19th century. Visits to the Bicken Local Heritage Museum should be arranged in advance. The collection thus combines insights into domestic and working life with an extensive historical photographic collection.

The Offenbach Local Heritage Museum includes a historic schoolroom, an old herb shop, a rock collection and mining history exhibits. Its focus therefore differs considerably from the household furnishings, agricultural and craft items, and photographs of Bicken at the Bicken Local Heritage Museum. The church in Ballersbach contains murals dating from around 1500. Together, these places offer different ways to explore local history: through everyday objects and photographs, school and crafts, geology and mining, and historic wall paintings.
