The “Dill View” lookout is a shared landmark on both routes of the Burg Greifenstein Trail: from there, you can enjoy a wonderful view across the Dill Valley. Another useful planning reference is the annual “Market in the Park” in the municipality of Greifenstein.

Routes and event date

Both routes of the Burg Greifenstein Trail pass the Dill View. Anyone interested in one of the routes will find the same lookout there, with views across the Dill Valley. The focus of this trail theme is therefore primarily on the landscape: the Dill View connects both routes with a specific viewpoint.

The “Market in the Park” is held on the first Sunday in July each year in the district of Beilstein. If you are planning a stay that includes the market, you can schedule it around this recurring July Sunday. Check the event date for your travel year before planning your overnight stay.

Culture and landscapes in the Lahn-Dill District

The wider Lahn-Dill District destination offers other cultural, industrial heritage and landscape attractions. Greifenstein Castle offers spectacular views from its twin towers. The Greifenstein Castle Bell World adds a historical perspective: almost 100 bells are presented there in a tour through a thousand years of German bell history.

In Wetzlar, the Lotte House commemorates Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” Also in Wetzlar, the Optics Trail invites visitors to discover and experiment with optical phenomena; it includes a walk-in kaleidoscope. The two attractions offer different experiences: literary history on the one hand, and experiments exploring vision on the other.

The Villa GrĂĽn in Dillenburg focuses on industrial and artisanal production in the Dill region. Its more than 20 rooms display objects and detailed reconstructions; the basement also houses an elaborate, multimedia mining exhibition. The Fortuna Mine in Solms-Oberbiel has its own connection to industrial heritage: it is the only anchor point in Hesse on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

In Solms-Oberbiel, the Fortuna Field and Mine Railway Museum has 50 historic field and mine railway locomotives and 100 wagons. Trains operate according to a timetable; check it before visiting. The region’s attractions therefore differ considerably: exhibitions and collections are the focus at the museums, while the operating timetable is a practical planning consideration for the train rides.

The Lahn-Dill District also offers landscapes and caves. The Lahn-Dill-Bergland Trail takes visitors through the district’s landscape in a particularly rewarding way. The Lahn Hiking Trail crosses the Lahn Valley and also explores the landscape of the Lahn-Dill District. The Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle cave system in Breitscheid is the largest cave system in Hesse and one of the most significant in Germany.

The RMV bus route 510 serves the Herbstlabyrinth show cave in Breitscheid on weekdays and during school holidays, stopping at Breitscheid, Rathaus. From there, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk to the cave. As transport information is subject to operational changes, it is advisable to check the timetable before setting out.
