Ahnepark combines green spaces, sculptures and a miniature railway; the Märchenlandweg runs right through Vellmar and on to the city of Kassel. These different attractions give your stay a variety of possible focuses: scenery, culture, activity and seasonal recreation.

Ahnepark: greenery, sculptures and a miniature railway

Ahnepark has extensive green spaces and a diverse landscape of trees, shrubs and flowers. Particular care was taken to preserve old trees when the park was laid out. The park also features numerous sculptures created on site over the years during various international sculpture symposiums. The vegetation, preserved mature trees and sculptures each add a distinct character to the park.

There are also practical features to help you find your way around: Ahnepark has seven entrances and exits, a restroom facility, a café-restaurant and parking areas by the entrances. During the summer months, visitors can experience the miniature railway run by the Vellmar Miniature Railway Club. Rides on the miniature train are available on operating days; if you are planning to take a ride, check the latest operating information in advance.

Outdoor swimming and activities

The Obervellmar outdoor pool offers a different focus. Its 50-metre swimming pool has a swimming and a non-swimming area, as well as a children’s adventure paddling pool. Large lawns surround both pools and are ideal for sunbathing. A beach volleyball court and a table tennis table provide further opportunities to be active.

The outdoor pool operates seasonally. Check its current operating schedule before visiting. This makes it easy to distinguish this part of your plans from the trails and cultural attractions described as available year-round, without assuming opening hours for a particular day.

Trails through Vellmar and beyond

The Märchenlandweg runs right through Vellmar and on to the city of Kassel; information boards along the route provide details about local legends and the past. The intermunicipal Eco Pfad Ahne connects Ahnatal and Vellmar and is about nine kilometres long. The two trails differ both in their geographical reach and in their focus: the information boards are central to the Märchenlandweg, while the Eco Pfad connects the two municipalities and has an approximate route length.

One starting point for the Eco Pfad Ahne is the Vellmar-Niedervellmar, Friedhof (Weideweg) stop. If you plan to use this as your starting point, check current transport connections in advance.

Architectural history and everyday life

The church in Frommershausen is the oldest surviving building in Vellmar and dates back to the 13th century. The Hof Helse Museum offers insights into the everyday life of past generations. The two sites highlight different aspects: the church represents a specific chapter in architectural history, while the museum focuses on the lives of earlier generations.

The Skate 'n' Bike Park Vellmar adds another option, with its own focus on activities. It offers numerous opportunities to get around by bicycle or skateboard. When planning your stay, you can weigh up the parkland and art, seasonal swimming, the different trail themes, local history and bicycle or skateboard activities.
