Liebenau’s landscape is shaped by the valleys of the Diemel and Warme rivers. Steep limestone cliffs, gentle hills and extensive forests create a varied setting. There are also hiking trails with distinctive destinations, cycle routes through Liebenau’s districts and insights into local craft history. This gives you different options when planning your trip, rather than reducing Liebenau to a single activity.
Hiking between shell limestone and cliffs
The “Muschelkalk im Diemeltal” Eco Path connects Lamerden, Körbecke and Ostheim and passes through the area of a former subtropical shell-limestone sea. A nature park circular hike to the Rosenberg natural monument leads to an impressive rock face. The “Rund um den Langenberg” route, by contrast, brings together several landscape features: forest, limestone grassland, wide-ranging views, fish ponds and the Der Weiße Born wetland. These trails therefore have different focuses—from geological history and a natural monument to a varied landscape loop.
Liebenau provides route information, maps, elevation profiles and GPX downloads for hikes. This helps you gather the available information before setting out. As trail conditions can change, it is also advisable to check the latest situation locally.
Cycle routes, the Diemel and the outdoor pool
The Diemel Cycle Route runs from Usseln via Warburg through Liebenau to Bad Karlshafen on the Weser. It is signposted along its entire length; on the Hessian section, green intermediate signs supplement the route markers. The Warmetal Cycle Route passes through the Liebenau districts of Niedermeiser, Zwergen and Liebenau. The routes described therefore offer different geographical reference points for choosing a route, without needing to combine them into one tour.
The Zwergen outdoor pool has a swimming pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a baby pool. There is also a beach volleyball court and a table tennis table. A tree-lined lawn of around 3,000 square metres provides space to relax; a playground is right next to the pool. The outdoor pool is heated using solar energy through an absorber system. As opening arrangements can vary by season, check the seasonal hours before your visit.
Canoeing on the Diemel is also possible. A stop at the Peace Oak in Lamerden could be one option along the way. Before your trip, check which providers and dates are available for a canoe tour.
Local history museum and architectural history
The Liebenau Local History Museum at Vordere Straße 23 welcomes visitors by appointment; arrange your visit in advance. The collection covers local history, traditional regional crafts, and agricultural tools and household objects from past centuries. A dedicated exhibition room focuses on Liebenau’s 19th-century linen weavers. On display are weaving patterns and a certificate belonging to an old master craftsman. A complete shoemaker’s workshop also illustrates one of the oldest crafts.
Another historical landmark is the Pappenheim manor house, considered a successor building to a moated castle. Together with the museum, it brings architectural and craft history into focus—two subjects that can be explored independently of a hike through the river landscape.
Juniper as a culinary connection
The limestone grassland slopes along the Diemel also link the landscape to regional products: juniper berries from the area are considered a raw ingredient for “Diemel Gin”. This adds a culinary dimension to the natural setting without presuming that a particular product or tasting is available.
