A walk through Kaufungen can take in different highlights: Steinertsee Park, the old half-timbered centre of Niederkaufungen, or trails that explore the history of water and the town. To find your way around, it is worth choosing routes by more than just their names. The Kunigundenpfad and the Kunigundenweg follow different routes; other trails each have their own thematic focus.
Steinertsee Park: nature area and circular trail
Covering around 45 hectares, Steinertsee Park connects the districts of Nieder- and Oberkaufungen as a green lifeline. The park includes a nature-oriented area with a bird sanctuary, reed beds and a fishing lake. This brings together a landscape with protected and natural features and opportunities for outdoor activity.
The circular trail in Steinertsee Park is over one kilometre long and is ideal for walking, jogging and Nordic walking. Anyone planning a loop in the park will find a specific trail length and suggested activities here, without needing to choose one of the themed trails through the districts.
Trails between the town centre, water and mining
The Kunigundenpfad runs mainly through the hilly outskirts of Ober- and Niederkaufungen and forms a loop around Kaufungen. The Niederkaufungen Half-Timbered Trail has a different focus: it runs exclusively through the old half-timbered centre of Niederkaufungen. The trails therefore differ both in their routes and in the areas they highlight.
The Eco Path People and Water follows the traces of various forms of water use. Along the way, it passes former mills and sawmills; insights into cultural history, scenic views and walks in nature are also part of its description. The Sankt-Barbara-Weg explores a different theme: it is named after the patron saint of miners and passes the Rossgang Mining Museum in Oberkaufungen.
The similarly named Kunigundenweg is a different trail. In the centre of Oberkaufungen, it passes former mills on its way to the 1,000-year-old collegiate church. SinnesGänge and church tours
SinnesGänge in Kaufungen-Oberkaufungen is housed in 16 accessible vaulted chambers of a former brick kiln. There, 40 experience stations invite people of all ages to discover and experience their senses. The combination of a historic building type and stations for sensory perception gives this visit a different focus from the hiking and walking trails. The operator publishes current visiting hours separately; check them before your visit.
In Kaufungen, volunteer church guides take visitors through the collegiate church, the former royal court and the Ritterschaftliches Stift. If a tour would suit your stay, check the church website in advance for current arrangements. These places can also be linked to the Kunigundenweg: its route passes former mills in the centre of Oberkaufungen on its way to the collegiate church.
The wider destination of Kassel
The wider destination of Kassel offers further nature and cultural themes. Habichtswald Nature Park is characterised by extensive beech forests and numerous volcanic basalt hills. Deep forests alternate with meadows and fields in Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land, which also has colourful mountain meadows and trout streams. As a regional cultural route, the German Fairy Tale Route runs through the district of Kassel and leads, among other places, to Sababurg, the Sleeping Beauty castle, and Trendelburg Castle with its Rapunzel Tower. These themes broaden the view of Kaufungen to include the landscapes and cultural sites explicitly named as part of the wider destination of Kassel.
