Hiking, cycling and culture are in the spotlight in Wehrheim. The “Red Roebuck” hiking trail passes the remains of the former Kapersburg fort; the Wehrheim Circular Route is a cycling tour around the town. The church also has a cultural role in addition to serving as a place of worship: it hosts concerts of various kinds. The next Wehrheim Apple Blossom Festival is scheduled for Sunday, 2 May 2027, at Ludwig-Bender-Bad. Check the date closer to the time.
On the “Red Roebuck” hiking trail
The “Red Roebuck” starts at the Ludwig-Bender-Bad outdoor swimming pool. At the remains of the former Kapersburg fort, an information board and the remnants of the walls provide information about the lives of the Roman soldiers once stationed there. The trail thus combines exercise with an insight into the history of the area, without making the historic site seem like a modern complex.
Other sections of the trail pass through a different landscape: near the barbecue area, a gravel path runs past orchards and bees towards the forest. A gravel path on the hiking trail leads to Jagdhaus Wehrheim. These sections offer specific points where the route changes in character: here, the remains of the fort; there, orchards and the path towards the forest.
Cycling route and culture in Wehrheim
As a cycling option, the Wehrheim Circular Route goes all the way around Wehrheim. It has a family-friendly variant that is just over 14 kilometres long. This is a specific distance for that variant; it does not indicate the length of the entire circular route. If you are weighing up hiking and cycling, you can consider these different ways of getting active without treating the two routes as the same.
Wehrheim Church has two stated functions: it serves as a place of worship and as a cultural venue for concerts of various kinds. Another cultural occasion is the announced Apple Blossom Festival at Ludwig-Bender-Bad. The event is scheduled for Sunday, 2 May 2027; check the details closer to the event if you are planning your visit around it.
In the wider Hochtaunus destination
Beyond Wehrheim, the wider Hochtaunus destination offers other points of interest. The Hessenpark Open-Air Museum is located in Neu-Anspach in the Hochtaunuskreis district. There, a family trail shows children and adults together how people used to live and work. To get to the museum, bus route 63 connects Wehrheim or Neu-Anspach/Anspach station with the Neu-Anspach/Anspach Hessenpark stop. Check current public transport information before travelling.
The Hochtaunus Limes Experience Trail is another regional attraction in the wider Hochtaunus destination. It follows the route of the Limes hiking trail or the Limes cycling trail and runs for more than 30 kilometres from Glashütten to Ober-Mörlen. This makes it a longer route option than the family-friendly variant of the Wehrheim Circular Route, which is just over 14 kilometres long; the comparison is between the stated distances, not the routes or their difficulty. Check trail conditions before setting out.
At Saalburg Roman Fort, guided tours cover the interior of the fort, the outer civilian settlement and the Limes. The “extra muros” tour focuses in particular on the settlement and the area outside the fort; this includes the fort baths, the inn, defensive earthworks and the Limes. This makes it possible to choose between different thematic focuses. Check tour dates before your visit.
Kronberg Castle and its history
Kronberg Castle is also in the wider Hochtaunus destination. It stands on a rocky spur on the southern slope of the Taunus and was probably built in the 12th century as an imperial castle on Staufen crown land. Since 2008, the Kronberg Castle Museum has housed a permanent exhibition on the castle’s history in the north wing of the Middle Castle. The museum and the castle’s interiors can only be visited as part of a guided tour, so check tour dates before your visit. The Hochtaunus thus offers different ways to explore history: information at the Kapersburg remains along the Wehrheim hiking trail, and exhibitions and guided tours at Kronberg Castle.
