Oberursel (Taunus) can be explored through a range of themes: art in public spaces, local history, guided tours, and insights into agriculture and nature. When planning your visit, it is worth considering your interests and the dates of events together. A walking tour of the Old Town takes place monthly, while the tour of the Heidetränk Oppidum is offered only from April to October. There are also signposted regional cycling routes.

Art and local history in public spaces

The prominent St. Ursula’s Church, with its Hohe Wacht tower, is Oberursel’s landmark. Numerous sculptures are installed and displayed throughout the city center, forming a sculpture trail. It runs from the station via Adenauerallee, Rushmoorpark and Lomonossowpark. The fountains are another visible trace of the town’s history: the close connection between the people of Oberursel and their water, “the stream,” is reflected today in numerous newly created, restored or reconstructed fountains.

The Vortaunus Museum is located on the market square. It opened in the summer of 1987 as a modern regional museum following extensive renovation work. Topics covered include soapbox cars, local history, industrial history and the Middle Ages. This range offers different points of interest for a museum visit; specific exhibitions may change.

Guided tours with different focuses

On the first Saturday of each month, a tour of the Old Town offers information about the town’s history. The tour of the Heidetränk Oppidum follows a different schedule: it is offered on the second Saturday of each month from April to October and takes visitors to see traces of Celtic life. The comparison is useful when planning: the Old Town tour is scheduled monthly, while the oppidum tour is seasonal. Check current dates and arrangements before your visit.

A two-hour tour with Maren Horn and Angelika Rieber offers another perspective on the town’s history. It runs from the monument to the Franco-Prussian War on Adenauerallee to the Old Cemetery in Oberursel. The tour covers different periods in the history of the park-like cemetery, as well as notable graves and their stories. Check current dates and arrangements for this tour in advance.

Agriculture, landscape and cycling routes

At the WeiĂźkirchen Ost U3 stop, the Agricultural Culture Axis illustrates agricultural production using corn as an example. A blue pipe system shows production and cultivation processes. A red pipe system playfully and entertainingly explains what happens after the harvest and how diverse the use and marketing of the products can be. This installation offers a different perspective on agriculture from the local history tours.

The Taunus Information Center in Oberursel has an interactive exhibition about the landscape’s special features and the habitats in Taunus Nature Park. Those interested in landscape topics will find a different approach here than at the Agricultural Culture Axis: the focus is on the nature park and its habitats rather than production and marketing.

Signposted regional cycling routes run throughout the city of Oberursel, guiding cyclists to neighboring towns and beyond. They follow paths with no or very little motor vehicle traffic. Check the exact route locally. When planning your stay, distinguish the signposted cycling routes from the walking tours and themed visits described above.
