Castle ruins with far-reaching views, trails through protected landscapes and a spa park right by the town center shape the activities in Königstein im Taunus. For your stay, you can focus on castle and town history, hikes or swimming. This orientation is also helpful when searching for a hotel: it directs your attention to the experiences you would like to enjoy locally.

Spa Park, Town Center and Guided Tour

The spa park borders directly on the town center, with its pedestrian zone, town hall and central square. An approximately 90-minute guided tour of the town and castle takes you on a walk through the spa park and town center and uphill to the castle ruins. It introduces their eventful history, presents other attractions and recounts Königstein’s development into a therapeutic-climate health resort. This guided walk combines an introduction to the town and castle.

Two Castle Ruins and Distinctive Viewpoints

Falkenstein Castle Ruins were built in the 14th century by the Lords of Bolanden-Falkenstein alongside the older Nürings Castle and were first mentioned in 1364. From the ruins, the view stretches far across the Rhine-Main Plain. The keep of Königstein Castle Ruins is a medieval defensive tower around 34 meters high. The Königstein Jousting Tournament takes place annually on the weekend after Ascension Day on the grounds of Königstein Castle; the exact date may vary from year to year.

The Hardtberg Tower offers a different view: It is 32 meters high, stands at 409 meters above sea level between the spa town of Königstein and its district of Mammolshain, and offers far-reaching views across the Taunus slopes. On a clear day, the view extends across the Rhine-Main Plain and Frankfurt’s skyline to the castles of Königstein, Falkenstein and Kronberg. The viewpoints therefore differ in what they look out over: Falkenstein Castle Ruins offer a sweeping view across the plain, while the Hardtberg Tower also affords views of the Taunus slopes and castles mentioned above.

Therapeutic Climate Trails and Circular Hikes

The Hochtaunus Therapeutic Climate Park stretches between Königstein and the Großer Feldberg across around 20 square kilometers and includes approximately 180 kilometers of surveyed therapeutic climate hiking trails. Twelve of the 34 therapeutic climate circular trails start from five trail portals in Königstein. These figures give an idea of the network’s range without requiring you to choose just one route.

Two trails differ in their routes: The Königstein 1 therapeutic climate trail, known as KS1, starts at the spa’s trail portal, runs along the Falkensteiner Hain nature reserve in the town center and connects the central town with the district of Falkenstein. The 3-Castles Trail begins at Königstein Castle, passes the spa and enters the Falkensteiner Burghain nature reserve. It is a moderately difficult circular route 11.70 kilometers long. This gives you a route between the town center and Falkenstein as well as a circular tour described in greater detail, with its distance and difficulty specified.

Swimming Options and Practical Planning

Königstein Spa has an indoor pool heated to 29 °C and a 32 °C panoramic outdoor pool with views of Königstein Castle. Königstein’s outdoor pool at the end of Forellenweg has retained the style of 1920s lidos, is equipped with modern technology and offers a large sunbathing lawn and extensive leisure facilities. As the outdoor pool operates seasonally and facility operations may change, check the latest information before visiting to swim.

The 3-Castles Trail is accessible via Königstein station on the RB12 and via the Königstein, Stadtmitte, and Königstein, Friedhof, stops on several bus routes. Check the current timetable before setting out. Paid parking is available at the town hall and at Luxemburger Schloss; from there, Königstein Castle Ruins can be reached on foot in about five to ten minutes. When planning this visit, both the bus connections to the trail and the parking options listed are relevant.

More Destinations in the Wider Hochtaunus Travel Region

The wider Hochtaunus travel region includes other destinations with their own distinct highlights. At the Hessenpark Open-Air Museum in Neu-Anspach, a family trail shows children and adults alike how people used to live, dwell and work. Guided tours at the Saalburg Roman Fort cover the inside of the fort, the outer vicus and the Limes; the “extra muros” tour takes you through the vicus and the outer area, including the fort’s bathhouse, inn, ramparts and the Limes.

Kronberg Castle offers another historical focus: It was built as an imperial castle on Hohenstaufen crown lands, probably in the 12th century. The museum and the castle’s interior rooms can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The free-standing tower, just under 44 meters high, offers sweeping views of the surrounding area and, on a clear day, as far as the Spessart and Odenwald. The regional attractions can therefore be distinguished by theme: Hessenpark and Saalburg present earlier ways of life and Roman history, respectively, while Kronberg Castle focuses on the history of the castle and the region.
