Rüsselsheim am Main offers a variety of reasons to explore: international art, urban and industrial history, a historic fortress and expansive parkland. When planning your visit, you can choose according to your interests: Would you like art to take centre stage, are you interested in the city's development, or would you prefer to spend time in green spaces? Local attractions each offer a different focus rather than all promising the same experience.

Art, Urban History and the Fortress

The Opelvillen Rüsselsheim Art and Culture Foundation presents international art from the modern era to the present day in changing exhibitions. As the exhibitions change, it's worth checking the current programme before your visit. The Rüsselsheim City and Industrial Museum offers a different cultural focus: an overview tour explores the intertwined development of the city and industry up to the present day. The changing art exhibitions and the thematic focus on urban and industrial history therefore appeal to different interests.

Rüsselsheim Fortress was first mentioned around 1399 and was expanded into a Hessian state fortress from the 15th century onwards. You can explore it independently on an audio tour. Media guides from the museum can be borrowed at the museum ticket desk for a small fee and deposit. These details give you two clear points of reference for your visit: the fortress's long history and the option of taking the tour independently with audio commentary.

Walks and Park Character

At more than 60 hectares, Ostpark is Rüsselsheim's largest park and offers space for extended walks. The park is also home to a high ropes course with 90 elements at heights of two to twelve metres. This brings together two different options: a walk with no set activity and a climbing course with clearly specified elements and heights. Which one shapes your visit depends on whether you have a longer visit to the park or the climbing course in mind.

Verna Park offers a different focus. In its more than 140-year history, it has retained its late Romantic character and is home to many exotic plants. Unlike Ostpark, which is defined by its size and opportunities for extended walks, Verna Park stands out for its historic character and botanical diversity. The two parks can therefore be distinguished according to different interests without conflating their individual features.

A Local Connection to Wine

Wine-growing is also part of the local story: “Rüsselsheimer Riesling” grapes grow in the Rüsselsheim vineyard on Frankfurter Straße. This is a specific connection to the city and its name.

Nature and Routes in the Wider Groß-Gerau Destination

The wider Groß-Gerau destination offers additional nature-related attractions across the district. Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Reserve lies in the west of Groß-Gerau district along the Rhine. It is Hesse's largest contiguous nature reserve and provides breeding and resting grounds for numerous breeding and migratory birds. Mönchbruch Nature Reserve lies between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf in Groß-Gerau district and is Hesse's second-largest nature reserve. These two protected areas are distinct regional attractions alongside Rüsselsheim's parks.

For longer excursions in the district, the Lutherweg 1521 offers a route of around 31.5 kilometres. The “Kühkopf Tour” route runs along the Rhine in Groß-Gerau district and through Rheinhessen. Check current route conditions before planning your trip. This will help you distinguish between Rüsselsheim's art and history, its different parks, and the nature and routes in the wider Groß-Gerau destination when making your selection.
