In Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, river landscapes, cycle paths and distinctive reminders of local history come together. For your planning, you can choose from several highlights: the Old Rhine landscape and the ferry to Nonnenau Island, the Mainspitze at the confluence of the Main and Rhine, or the castle park in Gustavsburg. This lets you explore the town through specific destinations rather than centring every activity on a single theme.

Old Rhine and Mainspitze

The Old Rhine landscape near Ginsheim-Gustavsburg is a local recreation area with floodplain forests, meadows and areas shaped by agriculture. Nonnenau Island lies just offshore. The “Johanna” Old Rhine ferry connects the Ginsheim bank of the Old Rhine with the island. This offers a different focus from a walk at the Mainspitze: the confluence of the Main and Rhine is located there, with direct access to the water and sweeping views of the Mainz skyline.

The Mainspitze is well suited to short walks and brief breaks on a cycling tour. It can also be a destination for an excursion from nearby towns in the Rhine-Main region. If you would rather explore the Old Rhine landscape, you will find not only the riverbanks but also surroundings shaped by meadows, floodplain forest and agriculture. Both highlights are part of a stay in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, but they offer different experiences.

An industrial monument on the promenade

The Ginsheim gravel dredger is a distinctive landmark on the Old Rhine. It was extensively restored in 2002 and 2003 and preserved as an industrial monument. Today it stands on Ginsheim-Gustavsburg’s central promenade. This makes it possible to combine an excursion to the water with a tangible piece of industrial history, without requiring another theme or a longer walk.

The gravel dredger is in a public outdoor area on the banks of the Rhine and is freely accessible year-round. This describes access to the outdoor area; it does not indicate opening hours or supervised operation. As a destination in its own right, the monument differs from the landscape attractions: here, the focus is on its former technical use, while the Mainspitze and the Old Rhine are experienced primarily through the water and landscape.

The castle park and the history of Gustavsburg

A striking wooden gate tower in Gustavsburg’s castle park commemorates the former Swedish fortress of Gustavsburg, which dates from the 17th century. The outlines of the former star fort can still be made out on the site. The park therefore combines a visible architectural feature with the history of the fortress, although the former complex has not been fully preserved.

The castle park invites you to take a walk and, together with the nearby Mainspitze, forms an excursion destination in the RheinMain Regional Park. This combination brings together a historical connection and a destination by the water. If you are choosing between the highlights, the former fortress takes centre stage in the castle park; at the Mainspitze, it is the confluence and the sweeping views.

Exploring by bike and on foot

The Rhine Cycle Route passes directly through Ginsheim-Gustavsburg. The Regional Park Circular Route also offers a cycling option via Nonnenau Island. On the other side of the Old Rhine, the route crosses meadows and follows the dike back north. Shortly before Bauschheim, it joins the Regional Park route again; this return leg extends beyond the immediate town area.

For the route via Nonnenau, the ferry connection is an important part of planning: the “Johanna” connects the Ginsheim bank of the Old Rhine with the island, but timetables and fares are provided separately by the operator. Check these details before setting off. This lets you include the ferry in your plans without assuming specific operating hours. Away from the cycle route, the castle park and Mainspitze offer the walking opportunities described above; the Mainspitze is also a suitable place to stop for a short break on a cycling tour.

These destinations represent different sides of the town and give you a concrete basis for planning your stay around the activities you have in mind.
