Culture and Gardens in Gießen
At the Notaufnahmelager Gießen learning and memorial site, an exhibition opened in June 2025 tells stories of flight, arrival and new beginnings. Personal stories are presented in the context of broader historical developments. The Botanical Garden of Justus Liebig University Giessen offers a different focus: it is Germany’s oldest university botanical garden, and its historic sections are still part of the grounds. If you are interested in commemorative culture, you will find a different subject here than on a walk through a historic garden.
Both places give your stay a distinct cultural focus, without requiring you to treat the city as merely a stopover. You can regard the exhibition and Botanical Garden as separate destinations in Gießen; whether and when you visit both depends on how much time you want to set aside for culture and further exploration.
Art Trail and Spring-Fed Wetland
The 7.2 km Gießen Art Trail starts at Ludwigsplatz and passes through the Philosophikum I and II campus areas. It runs past the edge of the Law and Science campus area to the Luther Oak and the Old Cemetery, before returning to its starting point at the Dachcafé high-rise. Its length and circular route make it a clearly defined way to connect several named places along one route. Plan it as a walk in its own right, taking the full distance into account.
The “Quellmoor bei Rödgen” (Spring-Fed Wetland near Rödgen) walk offers a different landscape, leading into the Aschborn and Uderborn nature reserve between Gießen and Rödgen. The Aschborn and Uderborn springs emerge there, forming a spring-fed wetland of national significance. While the Art Trail takes you through campus areas and city locations, the spring area is the focus here. GießenerLand: Trails and Landscapes
GießenerLand is a leisure region encompassing all 18 municipalities in the district of Gießen. Its extent matters when planning: not every regional attraction is located in Gießen itself. The wider area offers seven well-marked leisure cycling routes. There is also the 60 km “Römer-Residenzen-Reformatoren” (Romans, Residences and Reformers) themed e-bike route. For hiking, there are around 1,000 km of routes; a section of the more than 290 km Lahnwanderweg trail passes through GießenerLand. The Lahn also offers a different way to experience the region: in GießenerLand, it is used for canoeing and kayaking and has been one of Germany’s most popular rivers for these activities for many years. A large Celtic town was established there between 800 and 100 BC. The 22 km Kelten-Römer-Pfad (Celts and Romans Trail) connects the Roman Forum in Waldgirmes with Dünsberg and is one hiking option along the Lahnwanderweg. This creates a clear connection between a regional hiking trail and the history of Dünsberg.
Getting Here and Choosing Where to Stay
Gießen station is the central railway hub for GießenerLand and has long-distance rail connections. Within the leisure region, more than 40 bus routes provide access to the area. Check connections and departure times for your specific destinations and travel dates before planning your day; the number of bus routes alone does not tell you whether there is a connection to a particular excursion destination.
When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether Gießen’s cultural attractions and the Art Trail will be your main focus or whether you also want to include destinations in the wider GießenerLand region.
