The Milseburg Cycle Path follows the route of the former Rhön Railway through Hofbieber to Hilders and is 27 kilometres long in total. Hofbieber also has 17 Rhön circular trails, as well as cultural and historical attractions. This means you can choose cycling, nature-related topics, or visits to different places in the municipality as separate focuses for your trip.

Cycle Route or Circular Trails

The municipality of Hofbieber and the Hessian Rhön Nature Park offer 17 varied Rhön circular trails. They connect nature, culture and history, are well marked, and have well-maintained rest areas and car parks, as well as educational trails. This lets you choose between a cycle route along a former railway line and circular trails that combine nature and cultural themes. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

Art, Collections and Mill History

In Kleinsassen, the Kunststation presents constantly changing exhibitions featuring works by artists from various disciplines, including not infrequently internationally renowned artists. In addition to ongoing exhibitions, concerts, readings and talks are held regularly. The Pfunds Museum in Kleinsassen has a different focus: across 250 square metres, spread over two floors and seven rooms, it displays more than 10,000 exhibits relating to weights, units, weighing and measures from the past 5,000 years.

The Wallingsmühle offers another insight into cultural history. Its historic mill machinery has been fully preserved. During a tour lasting one to one and a half hours, visitors are shown how grain is ground into flour using water power alone. The tour thus combines a specific time frame with an explanation of how the mill works.

Milseburg and the Rhön Landscape

Hofbieber lies among the gentle hills and forests of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The municipality is also home to Milseburg, which rises to 835 metres. Its distinctive trapezoidal shape and panoramic views are among the mountain’s special features. A prehistoric trail leads up Milseburg, passing the ramparts and remains of the walls of several fortifications. The oldest date from a Celtic hillfort from the first century BC.

Bieberstein outdoor swimming pool is another option in the municipality: it is fed by spring water and offers views of Bieberstein Castle. The landscape, archaeological traces and outdoor pool represent different themes to consider when choosing what to do.

Adventure Stations and Stargazing

The “Freddy and the Green Belt” adventure station is located above the districts of Obernüst and Boxberg. It connects the history of the division of Germany with the nature of the Green Belt and invites families, hikers and nature enthusiasts to explore. Its features include a weatherproof outdoor book, a sky swing and an interactive photo point.

The Milseburg stargazing site in Hofbieber-Danzwiesen is equipped with a rotating wave lounger, binocular attachments, a movable sky map and a North Star finder. The Hofbieber Star Trail offers a different experience: it is about one kilometre long and runs from the car park for the barefoot adventure trail to the barefoot trail. Ten information boards feature quiz questions, activities or games for children. The attractions therefore differ in their themes and the kinds of stations they offer.
