Hilders offers different ways to explore the Rhön: the bird trail focuses on local birdlife and birdsong, an easy circular route follows the Ulster and the fish trail, and marked connecting paths lead to the HOCHRHÖNER® long-distance hiking trail. Rhön Panorama and Starry Skies

Hilders is located in the heart of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and the Hessian Rhön Nature Park. The Buchschirm is Hilders’ local mountain. At 746 metres, the “Krone” viewing platform offers 360° panoramic views across the Hochrhön, the Ulster Valley and far into Thuringia. The Ulstertal Star Cinema is also located at the Buchschirm, with a special reclining seat for observing the night sky.

Hiking Among Birdlife and Along the Ulster

The bird trail in the Ritterschlucht is around three kilometres long. Fourteen information boards share insights into local birdlife; QR codes let you listen to the corresponding birdsong directly.

Another option is the Rhön Circular Route 1, “Ulster & Fish Trail”: an easy, three-kilometre loop that takes about an hour to walk and includes 27 metres of elevation gain. It starts at the Hilders community centre, follows the Ulster and the fish trail via the Sandenhof, and returns to Hilders.

The two trails are similar in length but have different focuses: the bird trail explores birdlife and birdsong, while the circular route combines the Ulster and the fish trail in an easy loop of around an hour. If you are planning longer hikes, several marked connecting paths from Hilders lead directly to the HOCHRHÖNER® long-distance hiking trail, where you can begin or continue your hike.

Cycling and the Hiking Bus

The Milseburgradweg follows the former Rhön Railway line between Hilders and Fulda through the countryside. Seasonal access to the tunnel may change; if you plan to ride through it, check the current situation in advance.

The hiking bus takes visitors from Hilders to selected starting points for hikes. From there, they can hike back along a route of their choice. Operating days, fares and destinations may change; check these details before your trip.

Local History and Planning Your Stay

The Hilders Historical Trail leads through the town centre and introduces historic buildings, former inns, mills, churches and other notable places connected with the development of Hilders. Another historic site is the ruin of Auersburg Castle on the southern slope of the Auersberg. The historic circular-wall complex was probably built around or after 1350 and is now a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers.
