The Enkheimer Ried combines a large pond, protected habitats and a viewpoint with panoramic views. Bergen-Enkheim also offers historic buildings, specific route markers and a history of literature and events. This gives you different options when planning your trip: nature, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Nature and peaceful relaxation

The Enkheimer Ried, with its large Ried pond, has been a nature reserve for over 80 years. It is home to endangered animal and plant species, including several orchid species and the European pond turtle. The viewpoint offers panoramic views over the marshland and pond. You can explore the area on foot or by bike via the Green Belt Cycling Loop.

The Schelmenburg pond offers a different setting for peaceful relaxation. The Berger Warte, meanwhile, marks the highest point of the Berger RĂĽcken ridge. Together, these places offer different options for choosing an excursion destination: protected nature and biodiversity in the marshland, quiet relaxation by the pond or a prominent landscape feature on the Berger RĂĽcken.

Trails and navigation

The Green Belt Cycling Loop runs over the Berger RĂĽcken and the 203-metre-high Gisisberg before descending to Bergen-Enkheim. It is signposted with a bicycle symbol on a yellow disc. The route therefore has clear points of reference both in the landscape and in its signage.

Other routes are described for hiking. Stage 5 of the Green Belt Circular Hiking Trail ends at the “Michlersbrunnen” stop for bus routes 42 and 43 in Bergen-Enkheim. The Springs Hiking Trail runs between Seckbach (Atzelbergstraße) and Bergen-Enkheim (Marktstraße); 19 information pillars and boards stand along the route. These different details can help you choose between the routes: the cycling loop specifies its course and bicycle symbol, Stage 5 gives its endpoint, and the Springs Hiking Trail lists points along the route as well as the information boards.

Historic buildings

Historic sights include the local history museum in Bergen’s Gothic town hall, the late-Gothic White Tower from the 15th century, part of the old town wall, and Schelmenburg. The local history museum has been housed in Bergen’s Old Town Hall since 1959. The White Tower combines a specific architectural classification with its function as part of the former town wall.

Schelmenburg is one of the medieval moated castles. What remains is a Baroque water palace, built in 1700 on the foundations of the former inner castle. Those interested in architectural history can explore a range of features: the Gothic town hall, the late-Gothic tower and the development of Schelmenburg from the former inner castle layout to the Baroque water palace.

Literature and culture

Bergen-Enkheim’s literary history also has a specific date: the town writer award was established in 1974 and was the first award of its kind in the German-speaking world. Another historical trace leads to the Berger Markt. It was originally a livestock market; the first written record of it dates back to 1728.

The “Culture at the Nikolauskapelle and the Stadthalle” series features cabaret and variety evenings, comedy cabaret, concerts and author readings. Cultural attractions thus range from buildings and local history to a literary award and stage performances. You can tailor your stay to your interests: if you’re looking for nature and outdoor activities, you’ll find specific trails and landscape features; if you’re interested in cultural history, you can focus on buildings, the museum and literary tradition.
