The Bison Forest nature trail gives Münster (Hessen) a clear nature theme: on the site of the former Muna munitions facility in Münster-Breitefeld, environmental and nature conservation meet interactive stations. With MUNATUR, circular hiking trails, cultural venues in Münster and Altheim, and activities in Bürgerpark, you can tailor your stay to suit different interests.
Experience nature in the Bison Forest
The Bison Forest is a local recreation and educational facility about environmental and nature conservation for all ages. The nature trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and includes five interactive stations for movement, discovery and reflection. It may only be traversed on foot or by bicycle. This means that, alongside the nature theme, the mode of transport and route length are also practical details for planning your visit.
The Bison Forest and the MUNATUR exhibition can be visited independently during opening hours. Check the current opening information provided by the Municipality of Münster before your visit. The Muna site also has a viewing platform from which bison and Przewalski’s horses can be observed. The animals’ presence may vary.
Circular hiking trails and themed cycling route
Circular hiking trails let you explore Münster and its two districts. For a cycling perspective, the Gersprenz Münster Water Experience Route passes through the area. Information boards with QR codes provide interesting facts about nature, the land and its people. There are different ways to explore: take a walk through the town and its districts, or follow a themed route that passes through Münster and shares information about nature and the region.
Culture in Münster and Altheim
The ARThaus, the Old Town Hall in Münster-Altheim, hosts theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, readings and other cultural events. If you want to include an event in your plans, check the current programme and access information for the event in advance.
The Museum an der Gersprenz is housed in the historic Langsmühle mill. A museum was established there in 2005/2006 and is operated by the local history society on behalf of the Municipality of Münster. This local history venue complements the events at the ARThaus; the two cultural offerings differ both in setting and purpose.
Commemoration is also part of Münster’s public identity: since 7 April 2025, a total of 21 Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) by artist and sculptor Gunter Demnig have commemorated Jewish residents who were expelled, persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era at eight locations in Münster and Altheim.
Another focus for your stay
Bürgerpark Münster has a playground and a mini-golf course. If you plan to visit either, check in advance whether it is currently open. This lets you weigh up nature experiences, hiking or cycling routes, culture and park activities when planning, without having to fit everything into a single day trip.
