Viernheim combines local history with nature experiences and short, flat cycling routes. In the town centre, barns recall tobacco growing; by Waldsee, forest trails invite you to take a walk. The Viernheim Museum focuses on family history, while the forest swimming pool offers seasonal bathing. When planning your trip, you can choose between culture, outdoor activities and a visit to the swimming pool during the appropriate season.

Tobacco history and family history

In the 19th century, the barns in Viernheim’s town centre were used to dry tobacco. Tobacco was grown in Viernheim until the 1920s. This local history brings together two sides of the same activity: growing tobacco in the town and processing it in the barns.

At the Viernheim Museum, four living rooms and media stations tell the story of a Viernheim family from the 1930s to the 1980s. This offers a different perspective on the town’s history from that of tobacco growing: the focus here is on one family’s story across several decades.

Walks and nature at Waldsee

Forest trails and a forest nature trail around Viernheim’s Waldsee invite you to take a walk. The forest discovery trail in Viernheim has 16 stations where visitors can experience the forest with all their senses. The stations provide a hands-on framework for discovering nature, while the trails by the lake invite you to stroll.

There is also a children’s playground at Waldsee, with play equipment, as well as benches and a table for relaxing and having a snack. This offers another reason to plan a break by the lake.

Cycling, swimming and an annual sporting event

With its short, flat routes, Viernheim is particularly well suited to cycling. The forest swimming pool in Viernheim is open seasonally. Its facilities include a large swimming pool with diving boards, a non-swimmer pool with a wave slide, a paddling pool, a sunbathing lawn, a play lawn and a barbecue area. Check the dates before your visit so that the seasonal opening fits your plans.

The Viernheim Triathlon takes place annually in and around the Waldstadion. As event dates vary, check the specific dates for your travel year if you are planning a visit.

Distinctive regional highlights in the Bergstraße

Along the Bergstraße, rolling vineyards meet the Odenwald. This regional setting offers its own nature and cultural attractions, distinct from the ones described in Viernheim. In Heppenheim, the “Wine & Stone” discovery trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations.

The annual autumn hike along the Heppenheim discovery trail takes place on 3 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stops in the vineyards. If you include this event in your travel plans, check the details before your trip.

Another cultural highlight of the Bergstraße is Lorsch Abbey: it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991, and one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps is located there. Public guided tours are offered for groups of two or more. Check dates and prices in advance, as they may change.
