The five-kilometre-long paved riverside promenade, free of car traffic, and a roughly four-kilometre audio-guided walk offer two different perspectives on Neckarsteinach. One runs along the Neckar; the other climbs uphill from the riverbank to the four castles, passes through the historic old town and ends at the information centre. There is also an art trail, a listed ferry hut and a seasonal church tour.

Riverside Promenade, Walk and Ferry

The paved riverside promenade runs for five kilometres along the Neckar and is free of car traffic. The audio-guided walk is shorter, at around four kilometres, but connects several stops: it starts at the confluence of the Steinach and the Neckar, follows the promenade uphill to the four castles and then continues through the historic old town to the information centre. The distances therefore refer to different routes: one to the promenade, the other to the described walk through the town.

The information centre in Neckarsteinach provides information about sites, topics and activities in the Bergstraße-Odenwald UNESCO Global Geopark, as well as about tourism in the town. It is also the endpoint of the audio-guided walk. Visitors planning their trip around this stop can find information both about the town and the geopark’s topics.

The historic ferry runs between Neckarsteinach, Neckarhausen and Neckarhäuserhof daily on demand and at scheduled ferry times. The specific timetable is therefore relevant when planning your day; check the ferry times before travelling.

Art, Landmarks and a Seasonal Tour

Six works of art in sandstone, wood, canvas and paint are displayed along the Neckarsteinach Art Trail. The Treidlerbrunnen fountain stands on Treidlerplatz, near the Neckar. Another named landmark is the ferry hut: built in 1904, it is now a listed building.

Educational tours of the Protestant church are offered, giving participants the chance to actively explore the church interior. Tours last 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the group. They take place only in the summer months and by prior arrangement. This means the tour needs to be planned differently from a walk along the riverside promenade: the season and advance arrangements are both important.

The Bergstraße as a Regional Context

In the Bergstraße district, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. Visitors can discover nature in the Bergstraße-Odenwald UNESCO Global Geopark. These regional themes complement information about Neckarsteinach without conflating Bergstraße attractions with the sights of the town itself.

In Heppenheim, the “Wein & Stein” experience trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stops. During the annual autumn hike on the trail, on 3 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., hikers can enjoy wine and food at five stops in the vineyards. Check the latest event details before travelling. The Bergstraße Castle Trail offers a different scale: it is 120 kilometres long and divided into nine stages. Comparing the distances helps distinguish a themed route from a long-distance trail designed for multi-day hikes, without presuming a walking time or level of difficulty.

Wine is also part of the region’s appeal: Riesling is the Bergstraße’s signature white-wine grape, while Pinot Noir dominates among red wines. Visitors can sample Red Riesling and other Bergstraße specialities directly from producers, in wine taverns or at wine festivals. These opportunities are spread across different places and occasions in the region.

For culture lovers, Lorsch offers another distinct point of interest. Lorsch Abbey is home to one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps; the abbey was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. Public tours are available for groups of two or more. As dates and prices may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
