In Lorsch, the themes for a stay range from monastery history and tobacco processing to garden art and running trails. The UNESCO sites provide a historical focus; gardens and paths offer other perspectives. Which themes you combine depends on whether you are mainly interested in history, plants or exercise.

Monastery History and World Heritage

Lorsch Abbey was founded in 764 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. At the World Heritage Site, which opened in 2014, visitors can see the monastery grounds at Lorsch and Altenmünster, the King's Hall and church fragments; all are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit therefore encompasses both historic grounds and named architectural remains.

The open-air laboratory offers insights into how ordinary people and estate-owning families lived during the time of Charlemagne. The Zehntscheune exhibition depot provides insights into the history of the monastery. Both themes complement the architectural history with aspects of everyday life and monastic history.

A trained team offers guided tours of Lorsch Abbey. These include hourly in-person tours covering monastic life, architecture and possessions, as well as the library, scriptorium, Lorsch Pharmacopoeia and the monks’ healing practices. If you would like to take a tour, check the current schedule before your visit.

Tobacco and Industrial History

The Tobacco Museum illustrates the historical importance of tobacco cultivation and processing for Lorsch and the region. The city describes it as one of the largest specialist museums of its kind. This adds another cultural and historical focus beyond the history of the monastery: here, the emphasis is on the former importance of an economic sector.

The collections of the City of Lorsch also tell a part of Germany’s industrial history. They are cared for on two floors by the local history and culture association. The Museum Centre, operated by the State Palaces and Gardens of Hesse, provides further information about the history of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, particularly the history of education.

Gardens and Running Trails

The Lorsch Peony Garden traces the peony’s development from a medicinal plant to an ornamental showpiece. In addition to wild varieties, its thematic scope includes examples of Asian and European garden art, through to new cultivars. The garden is accessible year-round, with no opening hours or admission fee. Check access conditions before your visit.

The herb garden at Lorsch Abbey is terraced and designed to be accessible. It is suitable as a place to rest and to learn about monastic medicine. The two gardens have different focuses: the Peony Garden highlights plant development and garden art, while the herb garden focuses on medicinal and culinary herbs and their connection to healing practices.

For exercise, Lorsch has four running trails. They initially follow the same route along the fitness trail west of the Waldschwimmbad through the forest to Mannheimer Straße, where they branch off in different directions.

The Bergstraße as a Regional Setting

Lorsch can be reached by public transport and by car within the Bergstraße region. It is worth checking connections and timetables before you travel. A regional excursion destination is in Heppenheim: the “Wine & Stone” experience trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations.

An autumn hike takes place each year on the Heppenheim experience trail on October 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards. Check the event details before you travel. This makes it easy to distinguish Lorsch’s focus on monastery, industrial and garden culture from a regional excursion featuring wine and scenery.
