Explore Lindenfels from two perspectives: its architectural and festival history around the castle, and the trails and nature-themed attractions of Schenkenberg Forest. When planning your trip, consider both the main points of interest and the visiting conditions for each.

Castle, Festival Traditions and Town History

The Lindenfels Castle and Traditional Costume Festival has been celebrated since 1904. It helps preserve and keep alive the region’s cultural heritage, especially Odenwald traditional costume and festival traditions. A restored stagecoach, probably dating from around 1890, takes part in the procession every year in early August.

The castle’s architectural history also spans several phases: in the 14th century, it was expanded with the construction of the town wall; in the 15th century, the Romanesque core castle was converted into a fortress. The historic town tour presents further evidence of the past, including the origins of the castle and Lindenfels’ nearly 600 years of belonging to the Electoral Palatinate. Guided tours are also available; dates may vary.

The Lindenfels Museum opened in 1979 in the former tithe barn in the town hall courtyard, at Burgstraße 39. Its collections cover town history, folklore, agriculture, crafts and printing. Due to renovation work, the museum is expected to remain closed until spring 2027. Check before your trip to see whether the closure period has changed.

Trails, Insects and Medicinal Plants

The certified Li 6 adventure hiking trail runs from Lindenfels down into the valley to Schlierbach, along the Gerichtspfad to Winkel, through the Buch to Schenkenberg, and then back to the starting point below the castle. The route links several named sections into a circular trail; no walking time or distance is provided here.

Nature education is another key focus: the Lindenfels Insect Nature Trail opened on July 29, 2020, and has eleven stations. Information boards introduce the habitats of particularly endangered insects as well as insect-friendly plantings featuring fruit trees in meadows and forest wildflowers. The trail is on the Panoramaweg in Lindenfels’ Schenkenberg Forest, between the Hohl above Café Zur Ludwigshöhe and Schenkenbergstraße.

The medicinal herb garden is also located in the castle’s outer grounds, surrounded by historic walls from the outer defensive rings. Most of the plants are native to the region; many display a profusion of blooms in summer. Visitors who want to combine nature-themed activities with a stay around the castle will find a different experience here than at the stations on the Insect Nature Trail.

Getting Around, Travel and Refreshments

Info.Punkt.Burg was established as tourist infrastructure to help visitors find their way, particularly hikers on the Nibelungensteig. Since 2021, an information center run by the UNESCO Global Geopark and the town of Lindenfels has been housed in an old half-timbered building at the castle.

Bus route 665 provides a direct connection between Bensheim station and Lindenfels; the route runs between Bensheim and Reichelsheim. Bus route 666 connects Lindenfels with Fürth and Neunkirchen. As routes and timetables may change, check your connection before travelling.

The castle can be reached by car via the B 47, the Nibelungenstraße. The Burgstraße car park is below the castle and can be reached by following the signs for Stadtmitte. From there, it takes about five to ten minutes to walk to the castle.

Burgschänke is located right next to Lindenfels Castle in the Lindenfels Castle Geopark Information Centre. It serves Odenwald home-style dishes, cakes, and hot and cold drinks; it is open seasonally. Before your visit, check whether it will be open during your travel dates.

The attractions offer different seasonal highlights to help you choose when to visit: the procession with the stagecoach takes place in early August, and the medicinal herb garden is in bloom in summer. Burgschänke is open seasonally, while the museum is expected to remain closed until spring 2027. These differences can help you match the reason for your trip and planned visits with your preferred dates for an overnight stay.
