Vogelsang combines the natural features of the Ziltendorfer Niederung with several memorial sites that commemorate different historical contexts. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether your main focus will be birdwatching and outdoor activities or the history of the memorial sites.

Lowland, Nature and Cycling Routes

Vogelsang is the southernmost municipality in the Ziltendorfer Niederung. The lowland near Vogelsang is designated as a birdwatching area. Nearby is a plain crisscrossed by small streams and ditches, with numerous meadows and fields. The Ziltendorfer Niederung offers an accessible nature experience and can be explored on foot, on skates or by bicycle.

The two cycling routes differ in their stated connection to the area: the Oder-NeiĂźe Cycle Route passes through or along Vogelsang and the Ziltendorfer Niederung, while the Oder-Schlaubetal Loop passes through Vogelsang. For travel to the Ziltendorfer Niederung, the railway stations in Brieskow-Finkenheerd, Wiesenau and Ziltendorf make it easier to get there. If you plan to use these connections for your trip, check the current timetables in advance.

Memorial Sites and Historical Contexts

A war memorial on the village green in Vogelsang commemorates 42 soldiers who died in the First World War. During the restoration of the war memorial, a plaque bearing the names of 71 people who died in the Second World War was added. The war memorial is considered a sight worth seeing.

An obelisk in the cemetery in Vogelsang marks a mass grave of Soviet soldiers. A Soviet military cemetery in Vogelsang commemorates the fighting in early 1945. The Vogelsang war cemetery is located on Buchwaldweg in 15890 Vogelsang. These memorial sites thus focus on different subjects: those who died in the two world wars, a mass grave and the fighting at the beginning of 1945.

More to Explore in the Wider Oder-Spree Destination

The wider Oder-Spree destination offers further landscapes and cultural attractions. In Neuzelle, the five-hectare Baroque garden was restored according to original plans from the 1758 abbey atlas. Baroque avenues, water features and a terraced layout define the garden. Beeskow Castle offers a different historical perspective: its listed ensemble brings together buildings dating from 1250 to 1550, and its 30-metre-high keep has an observation platform. Since the 1990s, the castle has also hosted theatre performances, concerts and festivals.

The Lesser Promenade in Bad Saarow offers another way to experience the landscape. It follows the lakeshore from the spa gardens to Fontane Park and is about 1.5 kilometres long. Lake ScharmĂĽtzel covers around 1,200 hectares and is about 30 metres deep. Visibility in the water reaches up to four metres; anglers, divers, sailors and swimmers are among the groups who visit the lake. Together, these regional examples show the range of experiences in the wider Oder-Spree destination, from lakeside paths and water activities to garden design and castle architecture.
