Storkow (Mark) combines historic landmarks with routes through a distinctive lowland and lake landscape. The historic centre includes the old town, market square and adjacent lanes; for longer outings, choose between hikes of seven and 8.5 kilometres. This lets you give more space to either the town’s history or a specific landscape route when planning your trip.
Old Town and History
The historic centre includes the old town, market square and adjacent lanes. Storkow’s St Mary’s Church dates from the 14th century and has a 36-metre-high tower. A historical town tour explores the history of Storkow (Mark); a guided tour for visitors covers the more than 800-year history of Storkow Castle. The two tours therefore have different focuses: the town’s history in one case, and the castle’s history in the other. Group-size requirements apply to guided tours. If you plan to join the historical town tour, check the booking details in advance, as they may change.
Hikes by Distance and Destination
The 8.5-kilometre Salt Trail runs from Storkow Castle through the Luch meadows near Philadelphia to GroĂź Schauen and back to the castle via the Marstall and castle meadows. The route links several named meadow landscapes in a loop, with the castle serving as a clear starting and return point.
The seven-kilometre circular hike “Circular Hike to the Waltersberge Inland Dune” leads from Storkow (Mark) to one of Germany’s largest inland dunes. At 1.5 kilometres shorter than the Salt Trail, it also has a different destination: Waltersberge is known for its inland dune, while the Salt Trail passes through the Luch meadows near Philadelphia and Groß Schauen. Check the route details with the provider before setting out on the Waltersberge circular hike.
Lowland Landscape and Nature Highlights
The observation tower at Marstall Meadows offers views over the lowland landscape of the salt springs and Lake Schaplow. From this viewpoint, you can see how the lowlands and the lake meet.
The Sielmann observation tower in Selchow offers views over the expansive lakes of the Sielmann nature landscape “Groß Schauener Seen” and their almost continuous shoreline belt of silting vegetation. This includes reed beds, swamp forests, peat bogs and wet grasslands. The tower is closed to the public.
Naturgut Köllnitz is located in Groß Schauen, a district of Storkow (Mark). It houses an exhibition by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation about water, air and “the world in between”. This adds a distinct thematic perspective to the landscape experience: the exhibition explores the elements of water and air and the spaces between them. Together with the varied route lengths and viewpoints, this offers a clear choice between local history, hiking and landscape perspectives.
