Herzberg combines a rich church history with traditional old farmhouses and nearby Lake Herzberg, a place for peace and relaxation. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the town’s historic character or also include some relaxation by the water.

The church and its layers of history

The church in Herzberg was rebuilt in 1882–1883 using material from a fieldstone predecessor dating to the 13th century. The material used concretely links the two building phases: the medieval predecessor and the reconstruction in the late 19th century.

The listed furnishings include a silver-gilt chalice from the first half of the 16th century, a brass baptismal bowl from 1668, and two candlesticks. The chalice and baptismal bowl mark distinct historical periods within the furnishings. The church’s history therefore cannot be reduced to the date of its reconstruction: the older predecessor building and the surviving objects are also part of its story.

The townscape and relaxation by the water

Visitors can see traditional old farmhouses in Herzberg. They draw attention to the rural townscape, while the church, with its building phases and dated furnishings, offers its own focus on cultural history. Lake Herzberg is close to the town and is a place for peace and relaxation. This gives visitors different options when planning their trip: local history and rural architecture on the one hand, and relaxation by the lake on the other.

The wider area: Rietz-Neuendorf

Rietz-Neuendorf is a rural municipality with 14 districts spread across 184.81 square kilometers. In the district of NeubrĂĽck, water shapes part of the landscape: NeubrĂĽck is largely surrounded by water, and the Spree flows through the district. Along the road to NeubrĂĽck, carp ponds covering about 44 hectares lie on both sides of the main road.

Neubrück’s building history offers a different point of reference: the church was solemnly consecrated on May 15, 1955, and the half-timbered extension to the transept was renovated in 2018. In Buckow, the church and the Slavic rampart near the church are listed monuments. These examples illustrate different themes in the wider destination without equating them with Herzberg’s own features.

Birkholz’s church has medieval origins. At its entrance is a door with wrought-iron hinges that is about 300 years old. Visitors can also observe fallow deer, red deer, and other animal species there in an ecologically managed fenced wildlife enclosure. Check visitor access for wildlife viewing before setting out.

Sauen offers another perspective on the landscape: the forest ecology experiment transformed a poor pine monoculture there into a species-rich forest with high stability and resilience in a short time. The region’s range of themes thus extends from historic churches and protected monuments to waterscapes and forest development.
