Explore Woltersdorf through its water, forests, outdoor activities and local history. The surrounding lakes and forests give the town its recreational character; boat and steamer trips begin at the renovated Flakensee promenade, while trails in the hills around the observation tower reveal another side of the landscape. The town also has a local history museum and several connections to film history. When planning your trip, you can focus each day on one theme rather than trying to fit everything into a packed schedule.
Water and transport
The renovated Flakensee promenade is the starting point for boat tours and steamer trips to Berlin and through the surrounding lake district. This gives you two different destinations to choose from: Berlin or a trip through the lake district. Since 1913, the Woltersdorf tram has connected the lock with Rahnsdorf station. If you plan a trip on the water or a ride on the tram, check the relevant schedule in advance. Lake ScharmĂĽtzelsee, in the Oder-Spree travel region, covers about 1,200 hectares and is around 30 metres deep.
Trails around Kranichberg and the observation tower
A walking trail to the Woltersdorf observation tower starts at the lock. There are also hiking and mountain biking routes in the hills around the tower. The ridge route near the tower is locally known as the Woltersdorfer Rennsteig. You can choose between a trail with a named destination and other routes focused on hiking or mountain biking. If your main reason for visiting Woltersdorf is to explore the outdoors, you can make these trails a focus of your trip.
Film history and the local history museum
Joe May established May Film City in Woltersdorf in 1918. Another film connection can be found at Lake Kalksee: the towers of the Palace of Eschnapur once stood on its shore and served as a set for the film “The Indian Tomb.” These two references offer different ways to explore film history—from a film location to a specific movie set.
The local history museum is housed in the Old School, built in 1882, right by the town hall square. It displays prehistoric finds from the Stone Age, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as exhibits spanning the Middle Ages to the modern era. It also covers the history of local associations and institutions, including the church, school, fire brigade and tram. Traditional crafts of the lock community are also on display. The museum thus focuses on archaeological finds, institutions and crafts, complementing the film-related themes with other aspects of local history.
Liebesquelle and local tradition
Liebesquelle (Love Spring) lies at the foot of Kranichberg, near the Woltersdorf lock. Local tradition holds that couples draw water and drink it together. This custom adds a local tradition to the landscape and history themes.
