Maasdorf brings together several different areas to explore: a pond landscape and birdwatching, nature education and hiking trails, and culture at the Elster-Natoureum. When planning a stay, it is worth choosing between these highlights according to whether you are looking for nature information, a hike, regional history or a paddling trip. Bad Liebenwerda also offers its own city setting, with nature and culture themes.

Ponds, nature trail and birdwatching

The Maasdorf ponds lie northeast of the spa town of Bad Liebenwerda and are a popular year-round destination for local residents and visitors. At the Kleiner Maasdorfer Teich, the nature trail is about 1.6 kilometres long. Its 17 information boards cover the animal and plant life of ponds. Along the approximately 1.6-kilometre circular route at the Kleiner Maasdorfer Teich, you can observe grey herons and various species of duck; depending on the season and with a little luck, you may also see sea eagles and fish eagles. The boards provide information, while the birdwatching tips draw attention to possible encounters with birds.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The LassWissen project offers a hiking route starting in Maasdorf, where you can visit three research stations. The Meister-Bockert-Reich is a nature experience trail in Maasdorf. Its circular route passes through pine forests and the Elster floodplain; children can learn a lot about the local flora and fauna there. The descriptions offer different points to consider when choosing: the LassWissen route focuses on the research stations, while the Meister-Bockert-Reich features a circular route through the two landscapes mentioned above and nature information for children.

Industrial history, exhibitions and a water route

An exhibition on the region’s coal, energy and industrial history is presented right next to the Elster-Natoureum’s experience garden. The Elster-Natoureum also includes a detailed model depicting the entire Elbe-Elster district. Guided tours of the exhibition and visitor areas are available. The Parkschlößchen offers a further historical connection to Maasdorf: it was first mentioned as the Maasdorf manor in 1701. In addition to the hiking trails, you can also set off from Maasdorf on a paddling trip along the Kleine Elster. The options therefore include both routes on foot and a trip on the water.

Bad Liebenwerda: City and nature highlights

In Bad Liebenwerda, the spa park lies between the city centre and the Weinberge district, alongside the Schwarze Elster and Dresdener StraĂźe. A city walk takes you from the market square, past the town hall and Lubwartturm, to the spa park through the restored city centre, whose history spans more than 800 years. Another hiking option there is the 3 FlĂĽsse Tour: it passes through the spa town, is 8 km long and is listed as taking 120 minutes. Three rivers line the route. As durations and route details may change, check the information before your outing.

The Bad Liebenwerda Tourist Information office rents out bicycles with 26- and 28-inch wheels as well as e-bikes, and offers suggested tours. Check current availability before your trip. The Naturparkhaus in Bad Liebenwerda also introduces visitors to nature: they can learn about the landscape and the plant and animal life of the nature park, including the endangered capercaillie. For culture, there is the Central German Marionette Theatre Museum. Its Kaspers Welten exhibition presents the history of the Kasper figure in puppet theatre in a completely redesigned museum.

The spa concerts in the spa park’s concert shell are also part of Bad Liebenwerda’s cultural offering. They have been a tradition for 187 years and are a regular feature of the events calendar. If you would like to attend a concert, check the dates before your trip.
