Hellersdorf is surrounded by greenery, the Hönow chain of ponds and Wuhletal. Nature watching, expansive views and traces of the former village each offer a different perspective. Hellersdorfer Promenade is also part of the district’s character: it runs as a pedestrian zone between the prefabricated apartment blocks, where the cherry trees bloom a delicate pink in spring.

Wuhletal and Kienbergpark: landscape and open space

Wuhletal is characterised by floodplain and meadow landscapes, as well as smaller bodies of water, most of them artificially created, such as Wuhleteich. Shallow-water zones, some newly created, make this an area of nature that is deliberately protected, where flora and fauna can continue to develop. Those interested in landscapes and biodiversity will find a different focus here than in a view across the city: in Wuhletal, the bodies of water and the nature that merits protection take centre stage.

The 60-hectare Kienbergpark offers space for recreation, play and experiencing nature; at its centre is the 110-metre-high Kienberg. The park is a public green space and is freely accessible. As access conditions may change, check the latest visitor information before your visit. Kienberg is also home to “Wilde Welt”, a nature experience space for children and young people: covering 16,000 square metres, it offers a large open area for playing and letting off steam in nature independently.

Wuhlesteg and Wolkenhain: two perspectives

The approximately 280-metre-long Wuhlesteg connects the districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf. It offers views of protected vegetation and diverse wildlife. The highest point of Wolkenhain is 120 metres above sea level. From there, the view stretches beyond central Berlin and the TV Tower to the Brandenburg countryside. The two locations offer different vantage points: from the footbridge, attention turns to nature; from Wolkenhain, to the wider panorama.

An elevator is available at Wolkenhain for visitors with limited mobility. Check the latest information about access conditions before your visit. The green space and the elevator are separate reference points for your visit; the view from Wolkenhain offers a distinct focus alongside the natural areas of Wuhletal.

Excavations and local history

The history of the former village of Hellersdorf is brought to life through archaeological finds. Excavations carried out from 1983 to 1986 on the site of the former village, near the present-day Cottbusser Platz underground station, uncovered the former village church and a cemetery. The finds also included residential buildings, a bread oven and everyday objects. The discoveries thus range from traces of community life to insights into daily life. They give the local history a tangible connection without requiring any one type of find to represent the entire former village.

Getting involved and sustainable development

At Kienberggarten, a gardening community cultivates around 600 square metres according to permaculture principles. Those interested are welcome to get involved. This offers a different way of connecting with nature than the open play and experience area of “Wilde Welt”: here, the focus is on community gardening, while there, children and young people play independently.

The environmental education centre on the western shore of Wuhleteich is located on a 20-metre-wide and 60-metre-long larch wood platform. The platform was built for IGA Berlin 2017 at the western end of Wuhlesteg. The centre includes a lakeside terrace and an area by the lake; it serves as a place for learning about sustainable development and as a central meeting point. The open space invites visitors to attend talks and workshops. In this way, learning and community activities complement the experience of nature in the park, without being confused with the view from Wolkenhain or the archaeological traces of the former village.

A seasonal side of Hellersdorf

Those who want to experience Hellersdorf’s urban character as well as its green spaces will find it at Hellersdorfer Promenade. The pedestrian zone lies between the prefabricated apartment blocks; in spring, the delicately pink cherry blossoms add a seasonal accent. The district’s character thus ranges from meadows, bodies of water and experiencing nature to a pedestrian zone with a character of its own in each season.
