Explore Adlershof from different perspectives: Johannisthal Landscape Park offers green space and protected nature, while historic wind tunnels tell the story of technology. The Anna Seghers Museum and the Alte Schule add cultural highlights. You can tailor your stay to your interests, choosing between walks, aviation history, literature and art.

Landscape Park and Protected Core

The 68-hectare Johannisthal Landscape Park was formerly known as Adlershof Landscape Park and is a public green space and recreation area. Its amenities include walking paths, a runway, a dirt bike track, a beach volleyball court, a football pitch and a mosaic of flowers. At its centre is a 26-hectare section of the former airfield, protected as a nature reserve.

A circular path runs along the edges of this core area. A partly elevated walkway and wire-mesh gabions filled with fieldstones make the area, shaped by valuable biotopes, visually accessible, even though the core area itself cannot be used. A flock of sheep provides ecologically compatible maintenance there. The park thus combines paths and recreational areas with a nature reserve that can be viewed from the circular path.

Early Aviation and Technical Monuments

Two dates mark early milestones in aviation: Germany’s first powered airfield opened in 1909 on the grounds of the Johannisthal-Adlershof site. In Adlershof, Germany’s first flying school opened in 1911. The years mark two distinct milestones in the region’s aviation history.

The wind tunnels also represent different areas of technical research. The Large Wind Tunnel was used for aerodynamic studies in airflows and for optimising aircraft shapes and surfaces. For many years, the Spin Tunnel, also known as the “Trudelturm,” was the only way to simulate the dangerous flight condition of a spin in a laboratory. It is a listed technical monument.

Visitors can look inside the Trudelturm during guided tours and events such as the Long Night of the Sciences. Access is therefore limited to these occasions; check current tour options before your visit.

Walks, Literature and Art

Gedankengang is a digital walking tour that lets you explore the technology park on your own, starting at Adlershof S-Bahn station. If you would like to take this route, check the details before setting off. As well as walking paths in the landscape park, you can also explore the technology park digitally.

The Anna Seghers Museum is housed in Anna Seghers’s preserved original apartment on Anna-Seghers-Straße. Visitors can explore the writer’s faithfully preserved living and working environment. A visit to the museum thus offers a glimpse into a specific historical living space and complements the technical themes with a literary focus.

The Alte Schule cultural centre is the municipal centre for contemporary art in the district of Treptow-Köpenick. Around seven exhibitions of various artistic genres are presented there each year, including painting, graphic art, photography, sculpture, video art and applied art. As the programme may change, check the current selection of exhibitions before your visit. The cultural centre is accessible on every floor; confirm accessibility before your trip.
