The Pfeifer Monument in Helmstadt marks the beginning and end of the European cultural trail “Waldsassengau 1 – Between All Fronts”. Its stops lead to monuments, a church and places in the cultural landscape. Helmstadt’s place within the historic cultural landscape of Waldsassengau also gives the town a historical setting: the East Franconian district dates back to the Early Middle Ages, in the 9th century.

A cultural trail with specific stops

The Prince Ludwig Monument, the Bavaria Monument and the Thuringia Monument are stops on the cultural trail in Helmstadt. Another stop includes St Martin’s Church and war memorials. The route also leads to a clay pit and a lime kiln in Helmstadt’s cultural landscape. This brings individual monuments, the church and landscape features together as distinct points of interest. For visitors interested in culture and landscape, the trail offers several themes along the same route.

Hiking and cycling around Helmstadt

The Franconian Way of St Mary offers a different focus. This circular hiking trail consists of four routes and passes through five Franconian regions; Route 2 runs through Helmstadt’s fields. Hiking and Nordic walking routes have also been put together for exploring nature and culture in and around Helmstadt.

The Rebenritt adds a cycling route: its eight tours pass through Franconia and its wine-growing landscape, and Tour 2 runs directly past Helmstadt. To plan your route, it is helpful to distinguish between the two numbered options: Route 2 of the Way of St Mary passes through Helmstadt’s fields, while Tour 2 of the Rebenritt passes by the town. These details describe different ways to explore the region on foot or by bicycle.

Museum, viewpoint and markets

The Holzkirchhausen Local History Museum in Helmstadt-Holzkirchhausen features an extensive collection on village farming life across more than 250 square metres. It displays household, farm and field implements from three centuries. The nearby Krammberg viewpoint, also a stop on the European cultural trail, offers views of Helmstadt and its cultural landscape. The collection on rural life and the view from Krammberg thus offer two different ways to experience the town.

Markets are also part of the annual calendar in Helmstadt, taking place at Pentecost and on St Martin’s Day. If you are planning a trip for one of these events, check the dates for the relevant year.

Cultural attractions in the wider WĂĽrzburg destination

The wider Würzburg destination includes further cultural highlights in Ochsenfurt and Röttingen. In Ochsenfurt, an almost complete fortification with numerous gates and towers encircles the historic old town. The New Town Hall dates from the 15th century; its Lanzentürmchen tower houses a unique clock featuring figures and a moon dial.

In Röttingen, the oldest buildings in Brattenstein Castle date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was home to various noble families, including the Lords of Hohenlohe. Since 21 July 1984, its courtyard has served as the venue for the Röttingen FRANKENFESTSPIELE theatre festival. Helmstadt’s cultural trail stops and landscape features therefore take centre stage, while Ochsenfurt and Röttingen offer different historical and cultural highlights.
