Thermal pools with healing water, visible foundations of a Roman estate and themed trails give Treuchtlingen a variety of travel highlights. Other attractions include Renaissance wall paintings in the town palace, routes through the district of Graben and views over the town. You can plan your visit around your main interests: the thermal baths, historical discoveries or time on a circular route.

Thermal water by the AltmĂĽhl

The Altmühltherme Treuchtlingen offers thermal pools with healing water from state-certified healing springs. Facilities also include an outdoor thermal pool with a thermal garden and Kneipp facility, hot whirlpools and a sauna area. The spa offers a wellness focus alongside the town’s historical attractions and trails. If you are planning a visit, check current opening arrangements before you travel.

Roman estate and town palace

The Villa Rustica lies on the southern slope of Treuchtlingen’s Nagelberg and offers views over the town. The foundations of the Roman estate are clearly visible there: several living quarters, a colonnade and a covered shelter are arranged around a courtyard. The layout gives a clear impression of how the complex was organised. Check access arrangements before visiting.

Treuchtlingen Town Palace is another historical highlight. Fragments of Renaissance wall paintings dating from the mid-16th century can be found on the first and third upper floors; the Counts’ Hall has simple wooden ceilings. The exhibitions can be visited during the Tourist Information Office’s opening hours. Plan your visit accordingly.

Four themed tours lead to sights in the town centre and nearby area: the Medieval Tour, the Celts and Romans Tour, the Churches Tour and the Railway Tour. The themes let you choose a route based on your historical interests. Please note that some sections are not accessible to people with limited mobility.

Routes and viewpoints

In Treuchtlingen’s district of Graben, the Altmühltal-Panorama Trail’s Loop 6 and the Altmühltal Cycle Path pass through the village. The Fossa Carolina is also located in Graben. The route through Graben may change, so check the current trail markers before setting out.

The Treuchtlingen-Bubenheim Orchard Experience is a circular route of its own. This 14-kilometre themed trail and educational path starts at the AltmĂĽhltherme; the stated walking time is four hours and should be treated as a guide. Unlike the themed tours to sights in the town centre and surrounding area, this route is circular and gives you a specific distance and estimated duration to plan with.

The ruins of Obere Veste Castle offer views over Treuchtlingen. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check access arrangements in advance. This gives you two viewpoints to choose from, alongside the historic interiors and the Villa Rustica, without assuming that they are accessible.
