Muhr a.See brings together nature themes related to bird migration, distinctive local history and summer festivals. When planning your visit, you can choose what to focus on: the nature reserve and bird migration, historic buildings or a festival date.

Bird Migration and Lake AltmĂĽhlsee

Covering more than 200 hectares, Bird Island near Muhr a.See is one of Bavaria’s most important protected areas for migratory birds; the island has an interactive educational trail. The permanent exhibition “Lake Altmühlsee Habitat – The Fascination of Bird Migration” at the LBV Environmental Education Center at Lake Altmühlsee covers not only bird migration but also the creation of Lake Altmühlsee and the water transfer project. Interactive models illustrate these topics. The nature reserve and its educational trail, and the exhibition’s perspective on bird migration and the formation of the lake, therefore offer different ways to explore the natural environment.

Local History in Muhr a.See

The Muhr Gate Tower is the town’s landmark and part of its fortifications. In Neuenmuhr, the Church of St. James was built by Joachim Christoph von Lentersheim between 1618 and 1622 as a choir-tower church. The original Altenmuhr moated castle dates back to the 12th century. Together, these buildings offer different insights into the town’s history: from its fortifications and church construction to the medieval origins of the moated castle.

Stork Trail, Information Center and Festivals

Muhr a.See has an interactive cycling trail about storks. On the return journey to the LBV Environmental Education Center, the Stork Trail 2 cycle route passes through the half-timbered gatehouse in Muhr a.See. There is a boat landing at the Muhr a.See lakeside center. These attractions offer different points of interest: the cycle route and half-timbered gatehouse link the stork theme to a specific place, while the landing belongs to the local lakeside infrastructure.

The Stork Information Center in Neuenmuhr is an information point established jointly by the municipality and the LBV in the renovated old weigh house beside the Church of St. James. During the summer months, the center is open to visitors during the day. Check current local information before your visit. The AltmĂĽhlsee Festival takes place every summer in Muhr a.See; check the dates for your chosen summer before planning your trip.

In the wider WeiĂźenburg-Gunzenhausen destination

Lake Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Water sports are generally permitted on the lakes in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district; on Lake Igelsbachsee, they are permitted only as part of common use. Thus, in addition to Muhr a.See’s nature and local history, the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination offers a broader range of activities on the water.

The wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination also offers a variety of options for longer routes. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for 200 kilometers along the Altmühl River from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Cycle Route runs for around 160 kilometers from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim. The boating route on the Altmühl between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging is just under 120 kilometers long. Hiking, cycling and boating therefore differ not only in activity, but also in the stated route length.

Roman history also shapes the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometers across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Center. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; throughout the district, numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bath buildings bear witness to this history. Another historical highlight is Hohenzollern Fortress Wülzburg, above Weißenburg on the highest hill in the southern Franconian Jura at 630 meters; it is a monument to Renaissance fortress construction in Germany.
