Peiting can be explored through a range of themes: local history at the museum, Roman traces, church art and trails around the Ammer and Kalvarienberg. When planning your stay, it helps to match these highlights to the excursions you would like to take—from shorter walks to longer cycling routes.

History, Roman Times and Mining

The museum at Klösterle documents Peiting’s history from prehistoric times to the recent past. Its departments include mining, skiing, beekeeping, and hunting and fishing. The collection thus covers several fields, while the Villa Rustica offers a tangible glimpse into the Roman past: the Roman country estate was discovered in 1956 beside the road to the hamlet of Kreut.

The remains of the Villa Rustica’s bathhouse were excavated again between 2000 and 2004. They lie beneath a protective structure glazed all around, with information panels explaining the site. The Villa’s display panels are marked D, E, I and F. Another chapter of local history can be seen at Bühlach: a coal seam was exposed during road construction there and permanently preserved as a record of the area’s geological and mining history. Roman times and mining thus offer distinct highlights for a cultural and historical stay.

Church Art and Places of Remembrance

St. Michael’s parish church houses a baptismal font dating from 1331 and 14 Stations of the Cross created as reverse-glass paintings. The Mariengrotte, meanwhile, was built in 1896 by the Peiting parish community under Pastor Braun as a faithful replica of the grotto in Lourdes. Stone steps lead up from Obere Straße in the town center; from the grotto, the view extends across Peiting. You can continue along the Stations of the Cross to the summit cross on Kalvarienberg.

The memorial chapel is another place of remembrance. It commemorates the victims of expulsion and honors the determined contribution of the new residents to the development of the market town of Peiting. You can reach it on foot from the town center via the grotto path to the Mariengrotte; there, the path to the Vertriebenenkapelle branches off to the right. This allows you to take both the route and the significance of the site into account when planning your visit.

Walks and Trails around Peiting

The Ammerlauf nature trail in the Schnalz covers the history, nature, geology and legends surrounding the Ammer on eight information panels. It starts at the hiking parking area in the Schnalz, where the first panel shows the route. The Peiting forest adventure trail has a different focus: it is well signposted and leads from the parking area at Sonnenbichl via Kalvarienberg. The two trails offer different themes for a walk, without requiring you to combine them into one route.

A walking path runs around the village pond at Gumpen. The Gumpenserenade takes place on the shore every year in June. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the latest event dates. The season also determines when the Peiting wave pool is open, and opening times vary. Facilities include a heated wave pool, a higher-level non-swimmer pool with a slide, a water play area and a beach volleyball court; check seasonal opening times before your visit.

Cycling Routes and Practical Information

“On the Romantic Road” is a hilly cycling tour of around 40 kilometers. It runs via Peiting, Rottenbuch, Schönbegg, Wildsteig, Wieskirche, Steingaden, Riesen and Kreut, returning to Peiting. The many climbs and descents are part of the route’s character. Another option is the “On the Lech Heights” cycling tour, which runs via Kreut, Riesen, Hirschau, Lechbruck, Gründl, Steingädle, Urspring, Illach, Maderbichl, Deutenried, Grub, Langenried and Lamprecht, returning to Peiting. The “Romans and Welfs on the Lech” circular route is 13 kilometers long, hilly and runs between Peiting and Schongau. The details on length, route and terrain help you compare the routes by their respective scope.

The access road to the geotope is signposted from August-Morals-StraĂźe to the parking area. From there, an approximately 1.2-kilometer paved path runs along the B472 to the geotope; it is described as suitable for wheelchair users. Check the path conditions before setting out. This way, you can plan your stay in Peiting around the activities that matter to you.
