Türkheim offers several distinct highlights for a stay: castle history, Kneipp facilities, cycling and golf. If you base your choice of location on the activities you want to enjoy, historical buildings and the Baroque garden may be just as relevant as the locations of the Kneipp facilities, the “Northern Türkheim” route or the specific layout of the golf course.

Castle history in Türkheim

Türkheim Castle was built between 1532 and 1535 by Wolf Dietrich von Knöringen of the noble Schwabegg family. Duke Maximilian Philipp had the Baroque castle garden laid out as part of renovation work on the castle. The garden is open to the public. For those interested in culture, the castle’s architectural history and Baroque garden design are two aspects of the same castle complex.

The so-called “Little Castle” is also part of Türkheim’s architectural history: the wife of Duke Maximilian Philipp had it built in 1695. Several named historic buildings and designs are therefore at the heart of Türkheim, including the castle, the garden and the Little Castle.

Kneipp facilities at various locations

The Türkheim market town maintains Kneipp facilities in the castle park, on Herdgasse, in the Wertach floodplains on the forest path along the Wertach near the “Seven Springs,” and in Irsingen on Brunnenweg, west of the waterworks. These locations have different local settings, from the castle park and Herdgasse to the Wertach floodplains and the specifically named site in Irsingen. If Kneipp is part of your trip, you can take these locations into account when planning.

Cycling route and golf course

The “Northern Türkheim” cycling tour runs from Türkheim via Unterrammingen, Tussenhausen and Ettringen to the Wertach Cycle Path and back to Türkheim. Its route is described by a clear sequence of named places. Another activity is the golf course at Gut Ludwigsberg, which has 27 holes: an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole par-3 course. Cycling and golf offer different ways to stay active; for golf, the division into two types of course is also specified.

The Unterallgäu as a regional setting

For broader travel planning, you can consider the wider destination of Unterallgäu as a regional setting in its own right. The Iller forms the Unterallgäu’s natural western boundary, and the Wertach its eastern boundary. The Unterallgäu is accessible via the A7 and A96 motorways, an extensive road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg. Cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are signposted consistently; the Unterallgäu is also home to the Glückswege trails.

The cultural destinations of the Unterallgäu also have distinct profiles. The Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim are among the region’s important architectural monuments. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim features the world-famous Cedar Hall; the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. The region’s cultural heritage thus encompasses both significant buildings and distinctive interior features.

For nature lovers, the wider Unterallgäu has other destinations of its own: Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has an educational trail and an observation platform. These regional options complement Türkheim’s local highlights with a distinct perspective on the Unterallgäu landscape.
