There are three specific starting points for a trip focused on Erisried: the “Hochfirst” landscape conservation area, religious history and cycle routes that pass through the village. For your planning, it is important to know which route you mean: the Kammeltal Cycle Route runs from the source of the Kammel via Erisried and Stetten to Offingen. The Pfaffenhausen–Kammelquelle tour also passes through Erisried, but its final section to the source is covered on foot.

Hochfirst: Landscape and Geological History

The “Hochfirst” landscape conservation area lies west of Erisried and covers around 600 hectares. On its summit, the gravel dates back to the transition from the Tertiary period to the Ice Age and is at least one million years old. The area figure indicates the extent of the landscape conservation area; the geological age refers to the gravel on the summit. This brings together geographical orientation and a geological reference reaching far back in time.

Cycling on Two Different Routes

The Kammeltal Cycle Route is 68.24 kilometres long, easy and mostly paved; it is rated as suitable for families. The route runs from the source of the Kammel via Erisried and Stetten to Offingen. The distance refers to the entire route between the source and Offingen, not just the section in Erisried. Erisried is therefore part of the route, but neither its starting point nor its destination.

The Pfaffenhausen–Kammelquelle cycle tour passes through Erisried; the final section to the source is covered on foot. On the spur trail to the source of the Kammel, around 1.5 kilometres consist of a forest track, while the rest is paved. As the trail surface can change due to infrastructure works, check the current route information before setting off.

The two route descriptions answer different planning questions: for the Kammeltal Cycle Route, the total distance, difficulty rating and predominantly paved surface are the main points. For the Pfaffenhausen–Kammelquelle tour, the final walk is explicitly part of the plan. This lets you weigh up whether the longer cycling route or the route to the source followed by a walk better suits your plans.

Church and Pilgrimage

In 1167, Abbot Isingrim of Ottobeuren brought relics from Cologne to the church in Erisried. A pilgrimage to Ottobeuren takes place every year on 15 July. It has not been established whether it is directly linked to the medieval obligation. If you would like to include the pilgrimage date in your trip, 15 July is a clear reference point for planning your dates. The transfer of the relics is a dated event, while the pilgrimage takes place every year; a direct historical continuity has not been established.

Stetten: Viewpoint and Church Architecture

Landscape and history also come together in Stetten. St Francis Chapel stands on the southern edge of Saulengrainer Forest, between Stetten and Erisried. It is a viewpoint that many walkers already visit. The listed church dedicated to Saint Sebastian stands in the northern settlement of Stetten. Its foundation stone was laid in 1483.
