Trails for nature and exercise
The nature experience trail in Bad Grönenbach can be divided into three circular routes of different lengths. Along the way, it provides insights into flower ecology, cultural landscapes and pollinating insects. A 6 km circular route follows field tracks and woodland and meadow paths to outdoor stations 1 to 28. The different route lengths offer flexibility when planning your day, while the trails through the landscape bring together a range of nature-related themes.
Schloss-Aktiv-Park can be reached via the switchback path, which is also part of the “Bad Grönenbach blooms” nature experience trail. The park has 17 stations for strength and coordination exercises. If you’d like to combine exercise with the themes of the nature experience trail, this is a practical option: the trail leads to the park and is itself part of the nature experience trail.
The traditional Ringelschlagweg trail runs around Bad Grönenbach through coniferous and beech forests in the typical hilly landscape of the Unterallgäu. There is a bench for resting along the trail at Stellweiher. With a little luck, you can spot water birds from there—a chance to pause your walk for a moment and take in the view of the water.
Longer routes also feature prominently in the area’s hiking options: Bad Grönenbach is a stage stop on the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy and the endpoint of stage five and starting point of stage six of the “Wiesengänger” route. The trail between Bad Grönenbach and Bad Wörishofen, marked with Kneipp hiking trail signs, is 50 km long. The Glückswege trails pass through a landscape formed by old moraines and follow in the footsteps of Pastor Sebastian Kneipp. This information helps distinguish local circular walks from the area’s long-distance hiking routes.
For cycling, the Kneipp Cycle Route offers a route of its own: it runs right through Bad Grönenbach, is 50 km long, follows paved surfaces for most of its length and is signposted in both directions. This makes it easy to distinguish from the 50 km Kneipp hiking trail between Bad Grönenbach and Bad Wörishofen. As route information may be updated, check the latest details before setting out on a specific cycling trip.
Castle, garden and local history
Hohes Schloss is the landmark of Bad Grönenbach and can be seen from afar. It stands on a high, steep promontory at the western edge of the town. The building was constructed around a Nagelfluh rock at the site of a prehistoric refuge and was partly hewn out of the rock. Its location and construction give the castle a distinctive place in the townscape and offer a clear point of interest for anyone interested in history and geology.
The collegiate church tells the story of the town’s religious history: in the first decades after the Reformation, it served as a place of worship for both the Catholic and Evangelical Reformed congregations. The district teaching garden offers another way to explore plants. Opened in 2000 in the former monastery garden at Hohes Schloss, it offers ideas about plants and medicinal herbs. The garden is also a place to rest and spend some time.
Bad Clevers and choosing accommodation
The “Bad Clevers” natural swimming lake is at the edge of town, in the direction of the Zell district, and offers swimming with a view of Hohes Schloss. The facilities include a bathing pond with a children’s area, changing rooms, toilets and a kiosk. The swimming lake thus adds a chance to go for a swim to the area’s trails and cultural attractions.
The trails, Hohes Schloss, the district teaching garden and Bad Clevers offer a range of themes for a stay in Bad Grönenbach, without requiring you to follow one fixed itinerary.
