Übersee is a municipality in the Traunstein district of Bavaria, Germany. Übersee-Feldwies lies between the southern shore of Lake Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps. There are several different themes to choose from when planning your trip: beaches and water, cycling and hiking trails, nature watching, and churches and art. Which aspect you focus on can shape the pace of your stay.
Beach, Shore and Lake Chiemsee
The Übersee-Feldwies bathing beach has a natural beach around 800 metres long. The Übersee bathing beach has a floating beach wheelchair that can be used over grass and gravel and into the water. If you rely on this equipment, it is best to confirm that it is available before you travel.
The Feldwieser Bucht shore area includes a large bathing beach, Chiemseepark, cafés, restaurants, kiosks and a beach bar. Individual businesses and services may change; if a particular business is important to your plans, check its current offerings.
A SUP and kayak rental service in Übersee provides equipment for self-guided trips on Lake Chiemsee. As operators and equipment availability may change, check the current offering if you are planning to use it. Herrenchiemsee can be reached from Übersee by Chiemsee-Schifffahrt during the summer months. For a specific date, it is worth checking the timetable.
Trails and Nature Watching
Übersee has a network of cycling and hiking trails. The Chiemsee circular trail and cycle route goes all the way around the lake. This is a helpful distinction when planning your route: you can focus on trails within the municipality or a circuit around Lake Chiemsee.
A walk in the Feldwies area leads to the bird-watching tower. A free telescope there helps visitors observe birds, fish and plants in the Tiroler Achen Delta. The equipment’s condition may change; if you specifically want to use it for observation, check in advance.
The nature pavilion offers exhibitions on nature and environmental protection, as well as mountain and nature tours. Individual exhibitions and tours may change. Check the current programme for your stay if you want to plan for a specific date or offering.
Churches, Chapels and Art
St. Nicholas Parish Church was built between 1902 and 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style and is also known as the “Cathedral of the Achental”. The Church of St. Peter and Paul on Westerbuchberg contains valuable medieval wall frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The two churches stand out for different features: St. Nicholas for its construction period and architectural style, and St. Peter and Paul for its frescoes.
The Übersee chapel trails connect 14 chapels and four churches within the municipality and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. This also places the individual sacred sites in a broader context. The Leonhardi Church in Almau is a former pilgrimage church dedicated to Saint Leonard; it is considered one of the oldest churches in the Achental.
The Nikolaus Chapel stands on the Feldwieser Peninsula. According to local tradition, it was built in 1808 by a resident who had been rescued from a perilous situation on Lake Chiemsee. The tradition is part of the chapel’s history, while its location on the peninsula gives it a distinct connection to the lake.
The Exter-Kunsthaus offers another cultural focus, presenting works by Julius Exter and Chiemsee painters. Art and churches thus complement the nature and water activities with different themes for a stay.
Local Routes to Regional Offerings
The Schmankerlwege in Übersee connect direct sellers with inns and restaurants. They place a particular focus on regional producers and dining. Together with the routes for cyclists and walkers, nature activities and churches, they show Übersee as a destination with several thematic options rather than just one single attraction.
