Obing offers a clear focus for a trip combining water, Alpine foothills and local history. At Lake Obing, swimming facilities meet outdoor art; the parish church and local history museum add a cultural perspective. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether nature, swimming or history should play the biggest part in your stay.

Lakeside scenery and outdoor activities

Obing is located in the Chiemgau Lake District, a glacier-shaped landscape in the Alpine foothills, with gentle hills, numerous lakes, moors and forests. The area is ideal for cycling, hiking and swimming. You can make exploring the landscape or spending time by the water the focus of your trip.

At Lake Obing

Lake Obing is a swimming lake with a family-friendly beach. A long, gently sloping ramp allows wheelchair users direct access to the water. The lake therefore combines swimming facilities with a specific, named way to access the water.

Art and local history

The sculpture trail runs around Lake Obing. Since 1999, it has featured more than 20 works by contemporary sculptors, mostly from southeastern Bavaria. As loaned works change over time, so does the selection. The trail offers a way to experience contemporary sculpture in the landscape.

The high altar of St. Lawrence Parish Church in Obing features three carved figures by the Master of Rabenden: the Madonna and Child, and Saints Lawrence and James the Greater. The Obing Local History Museum is housed in the municipality’s former town hall. It displays artefacts relating to the history of Obing Castle, school and church history, and the LEO local railway. The church and museum shed light on different aspects of local history: sacred woodcarving and historical collection items.

Routes and timetable

The Way of St. James passes through the region; Obing and Albertaich lie directly on the route. For 2026, the Chiemgau Local Railway’s seasonal timetable lists Sunday services from May to September between Obing and Bad Endorf, via Amerang and Halfing. Check the timetable for your travel date before planning a journey.

A wider perspective: Traunstein

The wider destination of Traunstein district includes Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger See. In the Chiemgau Alps, the district has more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 metres. The Seeon Lakes are listed as a nature reserve in the district; Lake Waginger See and Lake Tachinger See are listed as a landscape protection area.

Traunstein’s salt history also offers a distinct cultural focus. The preserved saltworks buildings and the saltworks chapel provide insight into Traunstein’s significant salt history; the saltworks chapel is Germany’s largest chapel. A historical walking tour of Traunstein passes the Kulturforum Klosterkirche and then continues to the saltworks chapel, the saltworks buildings and the Salinenpark, established in 2019.
