Grabenstätt brings together nature watching on Lake Chiemsee, the Grabenstätt Moor and the 7.5-kilometre Hirschau circular trail with Roman finds and a museum about the Chiemgau impact. For planning purposes, the themes can be clearly separated: the landscape, trails and birdwatching shape time spent outdoors; culture enthusiasts can choose between Roman finds, impact research and events hosted by the GTEV “Chiemgauer” Grabenstätt. Season and the specific date of your visit play different roles.

Moor, Blossoms and Trails

The “Grabenstätter Moos” nature reserve covers around 1,250 hectares of alluvial forests and litter meadows. It is considered a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists. Blue and yellow irises bloom there in May and June; the exact flowering period can vary. These months can therefore serve as a seasonal guide when planning your trip.

The Hirschau circular trail is a 7.5-kilometre hike in Grabenstätt. It leads from the town hall via the market square, past St. Maximilian’s Church and St. John’s Church, into the moor towards Hirschauer Bay. The stated distance may help with personal time planning; adjust your breaks and pace to suit your day.

The “Hirschauer Bucht” nature observation tower offers views of Lake Chiemsee and its wading and water birds. From Hirschauer Bay, you can hike to the Hagenau observation tower as well as visit the nature observation tower. The routes differ in their starting points: the Hirschau circular trail begins at the town hall and leads towards the bay, while the additional hiking option starts at the bay.

Museums and Community Life

The museum about the Chiemgau impact features an interactive display on research into comet and asteroid impacts. The Grabenstätt Roman Museum focuses on Roman finds and meticulously restored mosaics. The museums thus differ in their subject matter: impact research at one, Roman finds and mosaics at the other. Check current opening hours before your visit.

The GTEV “Chiemgauer” Grabenstätt performs in parades and at secular festivals and holds an annual club Schuhplattler dance competition. These events add a focus on local activities to the nature and museum themes. If a performance or the dance competition is important to your trip, check the local events calendar in advance.

The district’s protected areas include the Seeoner Seen nature reserve and the Waginger and Tachinger See landscape protection area. These officially designated protected areas help preserve biodiversity, safeguard rare habitats and protect the natural and cultural landscape. In the town of Traunstein, preserved saltworks houses and the saltworks chapel offer insight into the history of salt production; the saltworks chapel is the largest chapel in Germany.
