Chieming lies on the eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee, the so-called “Bavarian Sea”. Visitors who want to include the lake, nature observation and local history in their travel plans will find a range of options here: a freely accessible shoreline, a historic village walk, cycling routes and seasonal boat connections.

Lakeshore, Nature Observation and Getting Around

The eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee near Chieming includes a flat, freely accessible stretch of shoreline about six kilometres long. The Chieming nature observation platform offers views of the lake and the Chiemgau Alps. It is accessible to people with disabilities and free for everyone to visit; native birds can be observed from there. A visit to the platform thus combines views of the landscape with a specific opportunity to observe nature.

For information and orientation, the Haus des Gastes Chieming has a tourist information office with maps, tips and services. It also features exhibition rooms, accessible facilities and insights into local culture and history. The Heimathaus Chieming operates as a museum and displays exhibits on early history. Other displays focus on processing flax into linen and using milk on the farm, presenting rural life and work.

Village Walk and History

The historic village walk begins at the Heimathaus, follows the lakeshore for a short stretch and returns to the town centre. This easy walk combines cultural highlights with scenic surroundings. The stops reveal different aspects of local history: the route passes Hofmarkschloss Neuenchieming, the former seat of the Hofmark, and continues to the parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt. The features mentioned there include Roman stones, tombs of the Hofmark lords and votive tablets.

The Dannervilla, built in 1901, is also on the route. At Schlosserhäusl, the walk passes a former mill and the first power station. Together, the stops offer insights into the religious, aristocratic and everyday history of the village without requiring a long hike. Combining the walk with a visit to the Heimathaus gives you a chance to explore both the museum’s themes and historic sites in the town centre.

Cycling Routes and Activities on the Water

For cyclists, the Chiemsee Cycle Route is a longer circuit: it is about 63 kilometres long and goes around Lake Chiemsee. Other cycling and long-distance routes pass through Chieming: the Chiemsee Circuit and Cycle Route, the Benediktweg, the Mozartradweg and the Via Julia. This choice also makes Chieming appealing to travellers who would rather spend their days on a longer route than on a village walk.

In Chieming, visitors can go surfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling and canoeing. From May to September, passenger boats also run from Chieming to Fraueninsel. The onward journey to Herreninsel takes about ten minutes, and the trip to Prien takes about 15 minutes. The return journey goes from Herreninsel via Fraueninsel and Chieming to Seebruck. As the timetable is important for planning a specific trip, it is advisable to check it beforehand.

Planning Trips and Choosing Chieming as a Place to Stay

The Traudl on-call bus takes passengers on request, flexibly and individually, from A to B in Chieming, Grabenstätt, Übersee and Grassau. You can choose your starting point, destination and travel time without a fixed timetable; check availability before travelling. When choosing a hotel in Chieming, it may help to compare your planned activities first: the easy village walk requires a different amount of time than the roughly 63-kilometre circuit on the Chiemsee Cycle Route. Boat trips are scheduled seasonally from May to September; if you plan to use the on-call bus, take its availability into account.
