Altenmarkt a.d.Alz can be experienced through its views connecting the river, town center and monastery: In good weather, the view from benches in the Altenmarkt municipal area stretches to the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau mountains, the Baumburg monastery church on the opposite bank and the center of Altenmarkt; below, the Alz Waterfall rushes by. Weather and vegetation affect how clear the view is.

The Alz: swimming and inflatable boat trips

The Alz river meadows are a popular swimming area in summer for swimmers and young people. Families can take inflatable boat trips on the upper reaches of the Alz. When planning, you can clearly distinguish between activities and seasons: summer swimming in the river meadows or a family trip by inflatable boat on the upper reaches.

Museum and architectural history

The Altenmarkt Local History Museum covers subjects from many areas of local life. Its main topics include the hammer mill, crafts, trade and commerce, as well as church history and agriculture. Bridges in Altenmarkt and the railway are featured alongside traditional costumes, historic linens and lace. Other topics include photography, music in Altenmarkt and the pharmacy. The collection connects the history of work and everyday life with religious, technical and cultural subjects.

A specific architectural landmark is the Church of St. Aegidius in Altenmarkt: Its core dates from the Romanesque period, while the lower part of the tower is Gothic. These two periods are therefore represented in different parts of the building.

Culture and enjoyment in Baumburg

For several years, the Baumburg Cultural Summer has offered a varied program in the courtyard of the former monastery estate. In November, the “Bayropäische Vorweihnachtssmarkt” presents gift ideas and unique arts and crafts in the atmospheric, illuminated monastery courtyard. Baumburg Monastery is also home to a traditional brewery with award-winning beer specialties. The Cultural Summer offers a varied program, while the November market features gift ideas and arts and crafts.

Traunstein as the wider destination

The wider destination of Traunstein draws attention to the district of Traunstein: It is home to Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger, as well as more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 meters in the Chiemgau Alps. The Seeon Lakes are listed as a nature reserve in the district; Lake Waginger and Lake Tachinger are listed as a landscape conservation area. The officially designated protected areas serve to preserve biodiversity, safeguard rare habitats and protect the natural and cultural landscape.

The town of Traunstein adds its own cultural and historical focus: The surviving saltworks houses and the saltworks chapel offer insight into Traunstein’s important salt history; the chapel is the largest in Germany. The historic walking tour of Traunstein passes the Kulturforum Klosterkirche and then continues to the saltworks chapel, the saltworks houses and the Salinenpark, built in 2019.
