Plößberg can be explored through several distinct interests: at the Großer Weiher, the swimming area and connection to the cycle route take center stage; cultural topics range from nativity scene art and glassmaking to religious buildings and a castle ruin.

Water and the cycle route at the Großer Weiher

The Großer Weiher in Plößberg is a swimming pond with boat hire and a kiosk, and is a stop on the Haselstein cycle route. The natural swimming area at the Großer Weiher is located at the edge of the forest. This brings together two different ways to plan a visit at one named place: spending time by the water and choosing a cycle route destination. If you enjoy combining cycling and swimming, you can make the pond a focus of your plans. Boat hire and the kiosk are among the specific facilities at the pond; as facilities and services can change, check their availability before your visit.

Nativity scene art and glassmaking

The Glass Furnace Builders’ Workshop traces the development of glassmaking from 1719 to the present day. Models, tools, documents and images offer several ways to engage with the exhibits and allow visitors to consider this long history from different perspectives. The Nativity Scene and Local Heritage Museum has a different focus: it displays a Plößberg Christmas nativity scene made by local amateur carvers, with biblical and traditional folk scenes dating from around the turn of the century. There are also three large home nativity scenes and a mechanical nativity scene. Together, these represent two distinct cultural focuses: the development of a craft and the variety of nativity scene depictions.

Historic sites and milestones

Liebenstein Castle Ruins were built around 1100 on a granite outcrop above the Waldnaab. From 1653, the Protestant and Catholic congregations jointly used St. George’s Protestant Parish Church as a simultaneous church. The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Cross in Burg Wildenau, Plößberg, was consecrated by Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller in 2005. These milestones are clearly distinct: a building from around 1100, the joint use of a church from 1653, and a consecration in 2005. The historic sites thus offer a range of points of interest—from a castle ruin and the shared use of a church to the consecration of a chapel.

A closer look at Tirschenreuth

In Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier combines the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum with six other specialized exhibitions in a former monastery. Visitors can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish farming history and see native fish in four large aquariums. The MuseumsQuartier regularly hosts special exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts. If you are interested in a specific event, please check its date, as individual dates may change. The Fischhofpark is also in Tirschenreuth. At its center are the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, the district court. The Tirschenreuth district is best known for its local cuisine for Zoigl, the cult beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest, and carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.”
