Falkenfels can be discovered from different perspectives: the castle, with its imposing keep, shapes the historic townscape. The Falkenfels Orchard Experience Garden, in the former Grimm Garden, combines a traditional orchard meadow with a pavilion that invites visitors to take part in activities together. Above the town, the Hirschberg 1c Theatre on the edge of the forest offers another cultural option.

The Castle and the Town’s History

The keep is believed to date from the 13th century. It served the castle’s and village’s inhabitants as a watchtower and refuge. This cautious dating and these two functions are part of the history of the striking building; Falkenfels Castle is the municipality’s landmark.

The castle is privately owned. The castle tower and a small museum can be visited with an accompanying guide. Check the latest visitor information before you travel: the tourist information office lists Sunday opening hours, and operating details may change. This lets you plan your visit to the castle around the current arrangements without assuming fixed opening hours.

Culture and Local Insights

The Hirschberg 1c Theatre above Falkenfels is the venue of the Karotte Puppet Theatre. It is also a place for weekend children’s theatre outings with the family, as well as school or daycare group trips. Since dates depend on the operator, it is advisable to check the current programme before planning a visit.

A municipal notice from 2013 mentions information panels at the three churches covering their origins, patron saints and art-historical background. These topics give visitors interested in churches some points of reference for learning more about the three distinct local churches.

In the Wider Straubing-Bogen Destination

For regional trip planning, Straubing-Bogen offers more to explore beyond the townscape of Falkenfels. The destination is shaped by the Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain and the Danube. Pilgrimage and regional history are central to Bogenberg: the hill is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place annually at Pentecost at the pilgrimage church.

The Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of the Bavarian lozenges, from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian state coat of arms, to their role as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages. Groups of ten or more and school classes can book individually tailored guided tours about Bogenberg. Advance registration by phone or in writing is required; with advance registration, tours are also possible outside opening hours.

Those interested in nature trails will find two options with different facilities in Wiesenfelden. The Kobelberg Nature Experience Trail is about 4.5 kilometres long and has nine stops; it is suitable for strollers and is also cleared in winter. The 2.3-kilometre circular trail around Beckenweiher Pond is accessible and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Its five information points combine information panels and benches with topics such as wildlife and plant life, protected status and the pond’s history. A 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk is also part of the circular trail.

For a different kind of day out, Bogen has three designated family tours with children: the “Culture Tour,” the “Beer Garden Tour” and “Left and Right of the Danube.” These names offer an initial indication of their different themes; the tours remain regional options within the wider Straubing-Bogen destination. This lets you compare Falkenfels as a starting point for choosing a destination with cultural and nature-related themes elsewhere in the region, without treating the locations or offerings as interchangeable.
