Mainberg Castle rises prominently above the Main Valley, nestled among vineyards. The site’s building history can be explored alongside different routes through the landscape: the Three Valleys Trail leads through three valleys into the Schweinfurt Uplands, the Main Cycle Route passes below the castle, and Mainberg has a landing stage on the canoe trail. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history, hiking and other route options.

The Castle and Historic Town Centre

Mainberg Castle is a four-winged castle complex with an outer bailey and a curtain wall. Its components include a keep dating from the 13th century, late Gothic residential buildings and a gatehouse dating from the 16th or 17th century. The ensemble is characterised by different architectural styles and dates; the keep and the later gatehouse provide historical reference points.

Mainberg was first mentioned in 1245. Half-timbered houses shape the appearance of the old settlement centre. The historic town centre also includes the castle, the former “Zum schwarzen Adler” inn and a former Baroque administrative building. The half-timbered houses, castle and former local buildings thus stand side by side as different facets of Mainberg’s history. St Michael’s Church in Mainberg was built by Anton von Brun in 1486, adding a building with a precisely documented date to this historic setting.

The Three Valleys Trail

The Three Valleys Trail begins at Mainberg’s entrance on the Main side, next to the small “Am Plan” car park. From there, it leads through the Meerbach, Hausen and Wollenbach valleys into the Schweinfurt Uplands. Its starting point in Mainberg, the sequence of the three valleys and its named destination give the trail a distinct landscape profile.

Ridges between the valleys offer panoramic views of the Steigerwald, the HaĂźberge and Thuringia, as well as the Main Valley. The course through the valleys and the views from the ridges describe different aspects of the same route: if you would rather focus on the landscape than the historic town centre, this offers a distinct starting point for planning your trip.

Cycling and Water Routes

The Main Cycle Route passes directly below Mainberg Castle. This location gives the cycling route a clear connection to the prominent landmark. Mainberg also has a landing stage on the “main wasserwandern” canoe trail. Alongside the Three Valleys Trail, these provide other, distinct route options in the area: the cycle route below the castle and the canoe trail with its landing stage. You can consider these as separate options rather than combining them into a single route.

Festivals and Traditions

Cultural events are also part of Mainberg’s character. The Mainberg Wine Festival is one of the highlights of Schonungen’s cultural calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific dates. Carnival in Mainberg also has a long tradition. While the wine festival offers a possible occasion to plan your dates around, Carnival reflects a longstanding local custom.
