Gerolzhofen brings together Gothic collections, a historic townscape, and several hiking and cycling trails with specific route details. When planning, you can focus on different interests: art and buildings shape a visit to the town, while the routes’ lengths and courses provide guidance for the active part of your stay.

Gothic art and historic townscape

The Johanniskapelle Museum “Art and Spirit of the Gothic” is housed in the Johanniskapelle, built in 1497, and the adjoining sexton’s house. The museum opened in October 2006. Its collection includes sculptures and reliefs by artists such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Hans Schäufelin, as well as wooden panel paintings, bells, a Gothic Bible, and liturgical vessels. This means that, alongside the buildings, a selection of Gothic art is also a central focus.

Another theme is explored by the small, privately run Gerolzhofen Beer Stein and Brewery Memorabilia Museum, which contains around 3,000 clay beer steins spanning more than 100 years of Franconian and Bavarian brewing culture. The two museums focus on different collections: Gothic art in one, brewing culture in the other.

The historic townscape of Gerolzhofen includes the Steigerwald Cathedral, the medieval town hall, and the double ring of town walls. The church, town hall, and fortifications thus offer different points of historical reference within the town. Together with the collections, they provide several ways to explore Gerolzhofen’s culture, without limiting the experience to a single museum theme.

The Nützelbachaue medicinal herb garden on the southern edge of town offers a different perspective on the area. The publicly accessible, barrier-free herb garden is in the nearby Nützelbachaue recreation area. Covering around 160 m², it showcases native, medicinal, and protected plants in twelve themed sections. These include culinary herbs, fragrant and poisonous plants, and plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Hiking and cycling trails by length and route

The Gerolzhofen circular trails vary both in length and in their described routes. G1 is 9.5 km long and runs from the Berliner Straße car park via Neuer See, Trimmpfad, Waldesruh, Alterberg, the forest kindergarten, Wiebelsberger Straße, the model airfield, Gertraudiskapelle, and the Jewish cemetery, returning to the starting point. G2 is an 8.5 km loop around Gerolzhofen. G3, at 7.8 km, runs from Nördliche Allee via the Protestant church, Weiße Marter, Hörnauer See, Hörnauer Wald, and the Volkach weir, returning to Nördliche Allee.

G4 is shorter at 4.8 km and runs from the tennis club via Seeweg, Allesgarten, the vineyards, Denkmal, Weidach, and NĂĽtzelbachsee, returning to the tennis club. G5 is 6.2 km long; its loop starts at the Berliner StraĂźe car park and runs via the go-kart track, Lindlachshof, the Dingolshausen sports ground, Volkach, and Neuer See, returning to the starting point. The five circular trails can therefore be compared by their stated distances and the stops along each route.

Other hiking trails cover different distances: the Blauer Löffel has a 6.3 km section in Gerolzhofen. The 7.3 km Weinsteiger runs through Donnersdorf, Gerolzhofen, and Oberschwarzach. The Main Hiking Trail is 45 km long in total and passes through Gerolzhofen, among other places. The 2Franken Cycle Route passes through Gerolzhofen and connects Lower and Upper Franconia.

The Wald.Poebel.Tour is another way to discover Gerolzhofen’s old town: this GPS scavenger hunt follows in the footsteps of the Gerolzhofen Waldpoebel through the old town. This brings together different ways to explore the area, from a themed search in town to circular and long-distance hiking trails and a cycle route.

Planning your stay

The Gerolzhofen Tourist Information Office provides detailed maps for hikers and cyclists and helps visitors choose individual routes. It also arranges guided tours of Gerolzhofen’s old town, the medicinal herb garden, and museums in the region. Wine tastings and vineyard tours in the Weinpanorama Steigerwald are also available through the office. This brings together different interests when planning a trip: finding your way on hiking and cycling trails, cultural visits, and wine-related activities.

Schweinfurt as the wider destination

The wider destination of Schweinfurt includes other distinct landscape attractions. Ellertshäuser See, in the north of Schweinfurt district, is used as a local recreation area. Brönnhof was added to the National Natural Heritage list on January 13, 2016; the former military training area covers 746 hectares and provides a habitat for protected species such as Bechstein’s bat and the great crested newt. This information refers to Schweinfurt, not to Gerolzhofen’s townscape.
