Half-timbered houses frame the streets and squares of Roth’s old town, while remains of the former town wall, once fortified with towers, add further tangible landmarks to the townscape. Roth thus combines architecture and local history with museums exploring the region’s industrial past. At the same time, its routes range from a nature trail to a mill route between two towns. When planning your visit, you can choose between culture in town, nature-themed trails and a named route linking Roth and Hilpoltstein.

Old Town and Collections

Numerous half-timbered houses frame the streets and squares in Roth’s old town. Remains of the former town wall, once fortified with towers, can be seen at Kugelbühl, behind the Sparkasse and the so-called Kanzlei, and on Stieberstraße. If you are interested in the town’s historic layout, you can combine these places with the Historical Tour. Options include a paper-based town rally, several Actionbounds and an audio tour, allowing visitors to explore Roth independently. The available app and paper formats may change; check what is currently offered before your visit.

Ratibor Castle Museum features a toy collection and a collection of 19th-century Franconian potter’s ceramics, offering distinct points of interest. The collection brings together toys, regional ceramics and a clearly defined historical period. Those interested in everyday and domestic culture will find a different perspective here than in the half-timbered houses or town wall.

The Roth Factory Museum focuses on the Leonische industry, which shaped the town’s industrialization and development in the 19th century. Tours of the operating machinery show how wire was turned into Leonische goods. During the seasonal opening period, tours are regularly held on Sundays; check the current visitor information before setting out.

Trails with Different Themes

Roth’s walking trails explore themes such as museums, water and horses, and include the Bernlohe Nature Trail. The Mill Trail offers a different kind of route: it connects Hilpoltstein and Roth and passes 17 mills. You can choose between themed walking trails and a named route focused on mills. Information about the walking trails and Mill Trail may change; check the town’s latest information and route details before setting out.

Roth Town Garden features the “Seeblick” observation tower, a woodland nature trail and a playground redesigned in 2023. Check the latest information about the facilities if needed. In Roth, the footpath and cycle path to the allotment gardens and the circular trail through Rothgrund have also been upgraded; check local trail conditions before setting out. The running course of the DATEV Challenge Roth passes through Roth’s market square. Its route may change from one edition to another.

In the District of Roth

The District of Roth also offers trails of different lengths. In Kammerstein, the KammerSTEINPILZ Trail is four kilometres long and features ten mushroom-themed stations with quiz questions, as well as a playground along the route. The “RH hoch 2” cycling loop follows the district boundaries and circles the entire District of Roth over more than 200 kilometres. The district’s options thus range from a short themed trail with stations to a long-distance cycling loop.
