The selection ranges from Inn-Salzach architecture at Max-Josefs-Platz to museums dedicated to wood and the Inn, and Mangfall Park along the river. If you choose Rosenheim as your base, you can tailor your time to these different interests: architectural styles, cultural and technological history, or specific facilities in the park.

Inn-Salzach architecture at Max-Josefs-Platz

The historic Max-Josefs-Platz is now a pedestrian zone, a place to linger and a central square in Rosenheim; it has been designated a pedestrian zone since 1984. Magnificent bourgeois houses in the Inn-Salzach style surround the square. Arcades, vaulted ceilings and bay windows shape its appearance. Behind some of the towering parapet walls, concealed valley roofs are hidden from view. If you are interested in architecture, it is worth looking at how these elements interact: the façade features are visible, while the walls partly obscure the roof form.

Wood and the Inn: two museum focuses

The Wood Technology Museum is housed in the listed Ellmaierhaus, dating from the 16th century, in Rosenheim’s pedestrian zone. Covering more than 400 square metres, it presents the history of wood and how it was and is processed and worked. Objects and models are complemented by video films, special exhibitions and educational activities.

The Inn Museum has a different thematic focus from the Wood Technology Museum: it showcases various hydraulic engineering methods, including work by Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking, and explores the craft of shipbuilding, also known as “Schopper”. The “Schopperstadl” explains how a ship is built, including the materials and tools required. The museum also shares information about the history, mineral resources and finds from the Inn, and displays images of typical buildings along the river. The difference in focus is clear: the Wood Technology Museum centres on wood and its processing, while the Inn Museum focuses on the river, hydraulic engineering and shipbuilding.

Sculptures and Rococo

Since 1987, the Salingarten in front of the KULTUR+KONGRESS ZENTRUM has been a sculpture garden. It features large-scale sculptures by renowned artists from Rosenheim and the surrounding area. Rosenheim is also home to the Heilig-Blut Church, an important Rococo church.

Mangfall Park and cycling

Mangfall Park offers an alternative to the buildings and museum exhibits. It stretches for about 1.5 kilometres along the river on the former state horticultural show grounds, and features a children’s kayak course, a climbing frame and a playground. These facilities offer different activities: kayaking, climbing and playing. This gives you a sense of what the park offers and its approximate length along the river.

There is also a practical option for cycling: bicycle repair stations around Rosenheim provide tools for minor repairs on the spot, such as pumping up a tyre or adjusting a saddle. Their locations may change over time, so check where a station is before setting off.
