Finds from a Roman villa are on display in the foyer of Breitbrunn Town Hall. Together with the neo-Baroque parish church, chapels and local customs, they shape the cultural and historical character of the town. By the lake, swimming and boating options are complemented by paths along the shore. When planning your visit, culture, exercise and time by the water can each be a focus.
Cultural history in churches, chapels and local customs
The neo-Baroque parish church of St. John the Baptist in Breitbrunn was built with stones originally intended for King Ludwig II’s Herrenchiemsee Palace. This connection to the materials offers an unusual perspective on the town’s history. The Malerkapelle in Breitbrunn was built in 1889. The Stocker Chapel is located above Lake Langbürgner; it is considered a lovingly renovated gem that testifies to deep popular piety.
Another historical landmark is the King Ludwig II Memorial Stone at Urfahrner Spitz. It commemorates King Ludwig II’s trips by rowboat to Herreninsel. Leonhardi rides are also part of local customs in Breitbrunn. Dates and arrangements vary; if you would like to experience this tradition, check the relevant dates and plans in advance.
Lake Chiemsee and Lake LangbĂĽrgner
The municipality of Breitbrunn am Chiemsee extends from the northern shore of Lake Chiemsee to Lake Langbürgner and lies within the Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte nature reserve.
Breitbrunn/Stadl lido has a long pier with a bathing platform and an accessible metal staircase providing access to the lake. The Chiemsee lakeside path passes directly by the lido. As individual facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.
For boating, you can rent rowing boats, electric boats and sailboats in MĂĽhlner Bay. Sailboats can also be moored at the local marina. This gives you a choice of different types of boat, while a visit to the lido focuses on access to the lake and the bathing platform.
Walking and cycling routes
The Chiemsee Circular Route runs along the entire shoreline of Breitbrunn, mostly right by the lake. The Chiemsee lakeside path passes directly by Breitbrunn lido. A specific route is also available for a cultural walk: the easy circular tour around Breitbrunn and Gstadt am Chiemsee starts at St. John’s Church and is 7.2 km long. Its length, starting point and circular format provide a clear framework for the walk.
By bike, Stage 08 of the Mozart Cycle Path runs from Chieming am Chiemsee to Breitbrunn am Chiemsee. The designated routes therefore differ: the cultural walk is a circular tour, while the cycling stage lists Chieming and Breitbrunn as its endpoints. Trail conditions and route details may change; check them before setting out.
