Wollbach up close
The restored Bietbrunnen is on the final stretch of the Wollbach village walk. This connects a named landmark in Wollbach with a local walking route. If, when choosing a place to stay, you would like to explore the village itself as well as broader nature and culture themes, the village walk offers a concrete starting point.
Another local leisure option is the boules court at the lower playground. It was possible to play there in 2022. If you are considering visiting the court today, check its current condition in advance.
Rhön-Grabfeld: Nature and trails
The wider destination of Rhön-Grabfeld lies within the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. The Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone of the biosphere reserve. A wooden boardwalk leads through parts of the moor, information boards explain the route, and an observation tower offers views over the moor. Its protected status, trail and viewpoint provide different ways to explore this natural environment.
At Gangolfsberg, too, a nature forest reserve is part of the core zone of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The basalt prism wall formed there 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön; it can be explored on the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The trail is about 2.5 kilometres long, and sturdy footwear is required. Guided tours for groups are available on request. While the Black Moor’s boardwalk, information boards and observation tower help visitors find their way, Gangolfsberg focuses on the geological formation of the basalt wall.
Culture in Rhön-Grabfeld
The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen uses faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads to present 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. The 12-hectare museum site is home to around 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, craft workshops and a village school. Hands-on activities about crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. The different types of buildings provide a vivid setting for the theme of everyday history. For a different perspective, the Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streutal valley with steam and diesel locomotives.
In Ostheim vor der Rhön, the fortified church was declared a monument of national importance in 2003; it is Germany’s largest and one of its best-preserved fortified churches. The Fortified Churches Museum in Ostheim presents a dozen other fortified churches from the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim. Here, the focus is on comparing several fortified churches in the region.
Wechterswinkel Monastery houses a district cultural centre for visual arts, music, literature and lifestyle. The gallery on the ground floor displays contemporary art, with a focus on sculpture. The cultural themes in Rhön-Grabfeld therefore differ markedly: the open-air museum is devoted to rural everyday history, the fortified churches museum presents regional examples side by side, and Wechterswinkel focuses on contemporary art.
