In Oberelsbach, short themed trails sit alongside longer circuits and regional attractions. When planning, it is worth considering the trails’ length and character: this makes it easier to decide whether a manageable circuit or a longer tour is right for your stay.
Hiking with a range of themes
The easy, family-friendly Rhön Circular Trail 9 – Butterfly Discovery Trail is 4.4 kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs. Information boards along the way share interesting facts about the way native butterfly species live. This trail has a clear thematic focus and differs from the moderately difficult Rhön Circular Trail 1 – Five Districts: at 15.9 kilometres long, it connects all five districts of the market municipality of Oberelsbach. The details about length and difficulty make it easy to distinguish between the two circular trails when planning.
Another option is the certified Premium Extratour Hochrhöntour. It is around 15 kilometres long and leads through meadows and forests, passing Thüringer Hütte, Basaltsee and Schwabenhimmel. Those interested in cycling holidays can also include Oberelsbach on a trip along the Rhön Cycle Route: the 180-kilometre route runs from Bad Salzungen in Thuringia to Hammelburg in Bavaria and crosses Oberelsbach roughly halfway along.
Nature, night skies and insights into the Rhön
The market municipality of Oberelsbach includes five nature reserves. The town also visibly takes steps to protect the night sky: all street lighting is designed with this in mind. The International Dark Sky Reserve Rhön was recognised in 2014. Alongside the hiking trails, these features give your stay another connection to nature, without requiring any particular viewing conditions.
The Haus der Langen Rhön Biosphere Centre in Oberelsbach has a permanent exhibition about the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Children can take part in a quiz trail with Elsbeth the Rhön sheep, who asks questions and encourages them to look closely. This offers a way to combine a visit to the exhibition with a little discovery activity of your own.
Crafts, events and local activities
Every two years, the Rhön Masked Carnival sees Spanmänner, Fosenöchter and other participants parade through the streets in traditional costumes and historic wooden masks; the public is welcome to attend. As the festival takes place every other year, check the event date if you plan to time your trip around it. The “Schnitz I Stand I Ort I Rhön” initiative offers a different insight into local crafts: visitors in Oberelsbach can watch woodcarvers at work.
In Unterelsbach, a district of the market municipality, certified orchard educator Carmen Schiefhauer offers age-appropriate guided orchard tours, activities, excursions and projects throughout the year. The programme is bookable and is aimed, among others, at school classes, children’s and youth groups, families, clubs and adults. These activities offer another way to learn about traditional orchards.
On the outskirts of Oberelsbach, a mini-golf course with a kiosk is located on Gangolfsstraße. It is close to the Oberelsbach playground, the motorhome stopover and the Els stream. Check the course’s current availability before planning a visit. The Pax-Bräu brewery, founded in 2007, also brews beers and speciality beers in Oberelsbach.
Rhön-Grabfeld as the wider destination
The wider destination of Rhön-Grabfeld includes the Lange Rhön, Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. The region also offers the Black Moor, which is strictly protected as a core zone of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve, as well as a wooden boardwalk through parts of the moor. Information boards explain the route, and an observation tower offers a view of the Black Moor.
The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen is another destination in the wider Rhön-Grabfeld area. Set on a site of around twelve hectares, it includes about 30 historic buildings, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school. Through faithfully reconstructed houses and farms, the museum presents 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. Hands-on activities about crafts and traditions complement the exhibitions, including demonstrations, practical courses and events.
