Walkable town walls, signposted circular hiking trails and a landscape of gentle hills, fields and meadows give Mellrichstadt many different facets. There are several signposted circular hiking trails around Mellrichstadt, including the Kolping Trail and the Sculpture Trail. If you would rather plan a cycling tour, there is a different selection: the long-distance cycle routes Haßfurt–Meiningen, Main-Werra, From the Main to the Rhön, Streutal Cycle Route, Rhön-Sinn and Iron Curtain Trail (EV 13) pass through Mellrichstadt. Old town, history and museums
The historic old town invites you to explore its walkable town walls and lovingly restored buildings. Wolzogen Castle in Mühlfeld was built in 1715. The museum grounds cover around 30 historic buildings across 12 hectares, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school.

The Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve.
